Reminded me of the Socratic method but deepcanvassing is what it actually is. https://www.deepcanvass.org/

The point is, I don't think we necessarily have to "convert" people it's just nice to be not reduced to name calling and hate.

How This Black Man Convinced 200 Racists To Leave The KKK

"When two enemies are talking, they're not fighting."

All That's Interesting

Random thought. Sure there are no algorithms to herd us into us vs. them but we still self-select into groups. OTH communication is important. I am reminded of Meghan Phelps.

"But Twitter also opened her up to the opinions of others, outside of the Church. Megan got chatting to a man from South Dakota, known as CG, and before long they were playing Words with Friends together every night. The weeks and months passed and her online opponent would ask questions about her community and doctrine, and she would respond. In turn, she learned that his family was of Norwegian descent, and he was tall with blonde hair and blue eyes."

@harld Goed nieuws inderdaad.

💡 an effective way to change peoples minds, explained in 30 minutes.

#deepcanvassing is the method with the most results. (more than leafletting)
Of course no method is extremely effective, but it's the best we've got (so it seems, also because you avoid the backfire effect)

I have this barber I go to (in boy mode) who does a good job and is likeable, but also has some dodgy opinions about minorities, and his boss is a full-on Trump supporter. I'm not sure why I keep going there, but he seems like a decent guy and I guess I hope to someday dissuade him from his baser instincts.

I thought about him as I watched this video by @leejamiller about #DeepCanvassing. She makes a lot of good points about how we need to reach across the aisle if we're to have any hope of tearing down this system of oppression. But I also understand why many on the left don't want to hear that, especially given all the vitriol coming from the right.

The thing is most Trump supporters are not full-throated #fascists. They are like my barber: decent people with a few wrong ideas about the world that feel like they have no other choice. We just need to find that common ground, show them a better way, and they may just come around. We're all in this together! ✊❤️

Why #FakeNews About Climate Change is Still So Effective
(and one effective solution)

"The #disinformation was simply more compelling than scientific facts, partly because it plays with people’s emotions, Spampatti said (eliciting anger toward elites who want you to eat bugs, for example).

Research has shown that #DeepCanvassing isn’t just successful at reducing transphobia, but also that its effects can last for months, a long time compared to other interventions."

Awesome conversation With @davidmcraney (of "You Are Not So Smart" and "How Minds Change" fame) about persuasion, #DeepCanvassing, #StreetEpistemology and the things that need to be in place for people change their minds.

Very useful, and I love that he's still sharing his findings, and even finding additional relevant studies to share.

Is it ethical to try convince someone to change their mind about a contentious issue?

I think the last few episodes of David McRaney's "You Are Not So Smart" podcast offers a good case for the answer "Yes!"

I love these discussions! Always thought-provoking, and with useful perspectives.
