I was only using my #Gmail account for my planning work as a volunteer because the person in charge had issues with my former email account. She *ignored all* my notifications about my new @Tutanota account and kept sending emails to Gmail. I also sent her this link: https://tuta.com/blog/degoogle-list
No reaction.

I’ve just pulled the plug, deleted Gmail. Now I’m curious to see what happens. Some people have to learn it the hard way.

Self-hosted alternatives that actually work in 2026 — the minimum viable stack

Self-hosted alternatives that actually work in 2026 — the minimum viable stack - tchncs

Compiled notes from running a fully self-hosted setup. Instead of recommending 50 tools, focused on what I actually kept running after the initial excitement wore off. The minimum viable stack that covers 80% of needs: - Vaultwarden (passwords) — 5 min setup, works with all Bitwarden clients - Syncthing (file sync) — zero server needed, just works - AdGuard Home (DNS/ad blocking) — better UI than Pi-hole IMO - Uptime Kuma (monitoring) — beautiful and simple Also covers replacements for cloud storage, email, media, VPN, notes. Tried to be honest about what is actually worth self-hosting vs what is more pain than gain (looking at you, email).

Replaced every Google service I used — here is what stuck and what I went back on

Replaced every Google service I used — here is what stuck and what I went back on - tchncs

Spent the last year methodically replacing Google services. Here is the honest report — what actually works as a daily driver and where I had to compromise. Fully replaced (never going back): - Gmail → self-hosted mail (Postfix + Dovecot) — works great for receiving. For sending, deliverability is a pain so I use a cheap relay (Mailgun free tier, 100 emails/day). - Google Drive → Nextcloud — runs on my VPS. Sync client works on Linux, Windows, Mac, Android, iOS. File sharing via links works fine. - Google Photos → Immich — this one surprised me. The mobile app auto-uploads, face recognition works, and the timeline view is genuinely good. Needs decent storage though. - Chrome → Firefox — obvious one but worth saying. uBlock Origin still works here. - Google Search → SearXNG — self-hosted metasearch engine. Aggregates results from multiple engines. Surprisingly good once you tune the settings. - Google DNS → Quad9 + local Pi-hole — DNS-level ad blocking plus privacy. Replaced but with caveats: - Google Maps → OsmAnd / Organic Maps — great for navigation, weaker for business search and reviews. I still occasionally check Google Maps for restaurant hours. - YouTube → Invidious/FreeTube — works for watching but you lose comments, recommendations, and community posts. Fine if you use RSS for subscriptions. - Google Calendar → Radicale — works with any CalDAV client (Thunderbird, DAVx5 on Android). Setup is simple. Missing: shared calendar UX is clunky. Gave up and went back: - Google Docs → nothing adequate — tried Collabora (LibreOffice Online), CryptPad, Etherpad. None match real-time collaboration quality for working with people who expect Google Docs. CryptPad is closest but formatting is limited. - Google Meet → Jitsi — self-hosted Jitsi works great for 1-on-1 but gets unreliable above 5 participants without a beefy server. Not worth the hassle when the other person insists on Google Meet anyway. Costs: - VPS: $5/month (2GB, runs Nextcloud + Immich + SearXNG + mail + Pi-hole) - Domain: $10/year - Total: ~$6/month vs $0 for Google (but you ARE the product) Happy to answer questions about any specific setup. The degoogling journey is worth it even if you only replace 3-4 services.

Prawie się dziś poddałem i chciałem zrezygnować z #deGoogle

Zostałem zmuszony do wykonania sporej ilości rzeczy w krótkim czasie.
A teraz? Brave, Libreoffice, Colabora, Proton Mail i Calendar, Proton Drive, Nextcloud, Tasks.org, kontakty w plikach CSV, OSM, Lumo i odcięty od wszystkiego Claude.
Jest ciężko, a wypracowanie płynności w tym trochę potrwa...
Ekosystem #google zbyt mnie rozleniwił i upośledził, zwłaszcza przez ostatnie 5 lat.

Racjonalna część mnie mówi – robisz to dobrze. Decentralizacja jest ważna. Prywatność jest ważna. Korzystasz, a nie jesteś wykorzystany. Wszystko jest jak trzeba, masz pełną kontrolę. I jesteś bezpieczny.

A leniwa część mnie – sprzedaj znów duszę. Zobaczysz, będzie wygodnie. Pamiętasz jak wystarczyło pomaziać palcem po ekranie żeby dodać coś do kalendarza, napisać maila i zrobić z tego notatkę? Ja pamiętam. No dalej, wywal ten #GraoheneOS , przecież tam nawet nie masz googla wbudowanego w ekran główny. I nie słucha cię cały czas...
