I am quoting so often from it but couldn't find the source again where exactly Timothy Snyder coined the concept Spectacles Of Pain.
So in the first 10 minutes of this podcast episode, he uses the term and elaborates on it.

I find the term and the explanations satisfying because they confirm my own opinion on what fascism really is.
Not some form of valid political ideology or framework, but a coat to cover up the sadists-in-the-closet.
An alibi for hurting people.
Like Christianity was an alibi for torturing and burning heretics and witches at the stake.
Fascists and their fans are actually really dark personalities. Little Eichmanns and Mengeles, everyone of them.
And I think it pays off to not debate political concepts regarding fascism, which would legitimise it. But to point out how deprived its fans are.
Maybe, this would normalize sadism. Ah well. There's always something, isn't there.
Debating it from the political POV doesn't make sense because that would entail logical arguments. And they do not work with logic. Except the logic of bullying, trolling, hurting. The Logic of Destruction.
