I opened an account at a credit union (VanCity) in 2018 as an act of protest against Canadian Big Banks that profit immensely from their investment in fossil fuel infraustrcture.
I guess a few other people did too… they're offering me a whole $75 to encourage others to sign up.
I'll pay them 5 cents to stop harassing me.
I was feeling iffy on my #creditunion after they did the bait and switch with a "high-interest" savings account (rapidly dropped the interest rate after a few months). Also found the non-stop life insurance promo letters annoying.
But them charging me a $50 fee for not closing a CD account within a tiny window, and refusing to waive the fee despite me being just a few days late, was the last straw.
Strangely, they don't seem to mind me leaving (to another credit union, of course).

Should I be paying more attention?

@quinn First, go with a #creditunion .
Second, I bought a car based not on it's exterior looks, but on the driver's experience, since that's what I'm going to be dealing with.
If you’re looking for a way to protest the current state of our union, here is a concrete way to strike a blow against concentrated oligarchic power and help yourself at the same time: Join a credit union.
Hit the major banks where it hurts, protest by keeping your money away from them in a credit union
