The wooden post in this photograph is part of Youghal’s coastal defence system called groynes. They are structures built perpendicular to the shore to prevent beach erosion by trapping sand moved by longshore drift. These timber groynes at Youghal are regularly maintained and replaced as part of ongoing coastal management efforts by Cork County Council. The long exposure technique used in this photograph typically requires exposure times of 30 seconds to several minutes, using neutral density filters to reduce the amount of light entering the camera, which creates the smooth, ethereal water effect by averaging out the motion of waves over time.

I walked to the end of the #malecón my final morning in Cuba and spotted some #fishermen with lines out in the harbor. I thought with #castillodelostresreyesdelmorro and the #lighthouse in the background this would make for a nice #blackandwhite.

Commissioned in 1898, HNoMS Harald Haarfagre was a Norwegian coastal defence ship. After the German invasion of Norway, she was seized by the Germans and rebuilt as a floating flak battery under the name Thetis. Battery Construction 129 on a foggy San Francisco day. Feels very surreal and eerie. This is at the top of Hill 129, now known as #hawkhill, in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area #ggnra It’s a WWII #coastaldefence battery that was never completed. And fortunately, never needed.
