"Chioggia Before Sunrise," Giuseppe Canella, 1838.

As one can guess, Canella (1788-1847) was a Romantic. Trained by his father, he got his start designing theatrical sets and designing interiors for the wealthy in Verona and Mantua. He switched to painting in 1815, and didn't exhibit until 1818, but by then his work was well-received.

He traveled quite a bit through Europe, winning prizes at competitions in Paris, and then settling in Milan in 1832. There he continued to do his own version of the Romantic landscape, often featuring realistic depictions of the urban poor along with all the dramatic sunrises and such. He died fairly young, at 59, and his son, also named Giuseppe Canella, went on to be a painter himself...but not as highly regarded.

In June, Israeli forces kidnapped another #Lebanese fisherman while he was #fishing with a friend near the southern border. Weeks later, the Israeli military bombed a fishing cooperative building in the village of Naqoura. These tactics mirror #Israel’s long-standing violence against fishermen in Gaza, where occupation gunboats fire directly at Palestinians who take their vessels out slightly past the shore. In July, the #Israeli military declared that the sea was a “no-go zone” for #Palestinians in #Gaza, banning all fishing, swimming, or any form of sea access.
