Shade House by Massive Order turns climate into architecture. A tensile canopy filters sun and privacy, mediating between brick and street—shade becomes structure, softness becomes order.

Deforestation of the Amazon has declined by about 50% in the past year - but there's more to the story that makes it a bit less of a success: https://app.wedonthavetime.org/posts/35c9168b-684e-40fe-b247-eb18b7724f55

Give Climate Warning ⚠️ to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: The rate of deforestation in the Amazon has slowed by nearly 50 percent (but there's a hidden cost) | We Don't Have Time

After Brazil's destructive Bolsonaro administration, the world looked forward to new leadership that promised to protect the Amazon. But now, one year into the new president's term, the state of Brazil's ecosystems is more of a mixed bag rather than a flyaway success. . 🌎 The Good: Deforestation of the Amazon in decline Brazil's new president, Lula da Silva, is well on his way to ending deforestation in the Amazon. After just one year, the rate of deforestation has slowed by roughly 50%, a deforestation rate not seen since 2018! And in indigenous territories, that number was even higher at 73%! . 🌎 The Bad: Other areas can't be overlooked Of course, protections for trees today are important, but the big picture can't be ignored. A paved highway may soon make its way through the western Amazon - a small threat to the trees there now, but a major threat in the long term. Backed by construction and agriculture lobbies, experts worry that the highway could pave the way (literally) for illegal logging, mining, and habitat degradation. Even to the south of the Amazon, agriculture operations in the Cerrado devastated the area at its worst rate since 2016. . 🌎 The Verdict: Progress with a side of greenwashing Slowing the rate of deforestation is necessary, but it can't happen at the expense of another environment. The global stage is currently focused on deforestation, but conservation is much more complicated than simply

COP28 is down in the history books. We saw a historic climate deal come out of it, but is it full of loopholes?

Pixel Planet Today turns 4 today! We made a blog post, sent out a newsletter, and of course, a cool illustration that spans the length of the slides for today's post 😊

Pixel Planet Today on Instagram: "In the past four years that I've made these posts (many with the help of some wonderful people), I've learned a lot. I've learned that giant golden-crowned flying foxes have wingspans reaching 5 and a half feet (1.7 meters; Post 941), and that in the late 1800s, there were likely 50,000 grizzly bears in the continental United States (today there are around 2,000; all the way back at Post 20). I've learned more about the effects of climate change (like how your favorite chocolate is quickly becoming a commodity), and some of the incredible ways people are fighting it (like wireless EV chargers being built directly into roads). . I can't say I remember all of the 1,000+ facts that I've covered, but on the other hand, the point of this project isn't just for me to learn things - it's to help you learn things. Climate and environmental education are increasingly becoming some of the most important types of education, yet many of us don't even know what our everyday actions mean for the planet (and ultimately, our own well-being). I love presenting facts about our planet in an approachable, art-based way - something that ideally makes it feel less like 'school' and more like "Let's save that hippo that's made out of squares!" . Which really, brings me to what I'm ultimately wanting to say. Pixel Planet Today wouldn't be here without the amazing support you've all given me. The likes, the comments, the email opens - it may seem like something small, but it ultimately helps Pixel and Terrabyte grow into what I dream they can be. There is truly nothing I'd rather do with my life than help protect our natural planet with design and technology, so thank you for supporting me in making that a reality. ❤️🌎 . 🌎 OTHER THINGS: I took up most of my allotted characters blabbing about how thankful I am, so very quickly: there is a Pixel Day blog post and a newsletter out now, otherwise we'll be with a regular post here soon! . . Graphic shows a park ranger pointing out over a national park, modern city center, and islands. The factoid reads: "Today marks the 4th anniversary of Pixel Planet Today.""

Pixel Planet Today on Instagram: "The Infrastructure Law is the largest investment to fight climate change in the country yet. But sadly, in order to get the support of key climate deniers - there are pieces that actually contribute to climate change. . 🌎 The Good: Public transportation, EV charging: Every supporter of the now-law and advocate for the planet knows that the Infrastructure Law puts LOADS of money into big environmental issues here at home. Public transportation is severely broken across much of the United States, and passenger rail is nowhere close to the level found in other countries. Adding billions to these (and more) issues will put the country closer to meeting its environmental goals. . 🌎 The Bad: 'Induced demand': While a (relatively) small chunk of money will go towards road widening, its benefits are only short-term. Adding more space for traffic will allow cars to flow more freely, but a phenomenon known as 'induced demand' actually means the space will fill up with even more cars (leading to even more carbon emissions). . 🌎 The Verdict: The best investment yet, but not perfect: Nothing is perfect, but that doesn't mean everything has to be hypocritical. The irony behind the conflicting pieces of the Law would be funnier if it wasn't a global crisis, but what else can you expect from a law seeking to remedy a (strangely) divisive global issue. We still stand with the progress that comes with the Infrastructure Law, but we are more excited about laws that are yet to come. . . Time for an #Introduction !

My name is Sammy Harper, I'm a Web & Graphic Designer based in Omaha, NE. While I take on various design contracts, I am most proud of my work at Terrabyte (@terrabyte), a green tech company I started earlier this year. Piggybacking off of my pixel art project, Pixel Planet Today (https://pixelplanettoday.com), Terrabyte is home to projects that combine design and technology to fight conservation crises. I am always incredibly excited to work on these types of projects, and love every second I put towards them.
