Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Massachusetts Leads The Pack Eliminating Cervical Cancer Well, its not really total elimination or zero cases but reducing the cases to 4 or fewer for every 100,000 women. Preventing all cervical cancer cases is actually a realistic goal since all cases are driven by the Human Papilloma Virus infections and are preventable by the use of HPV vaccine. A new national study led by collaborators at the Medical University of South Carolina, the Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the University of Puerto Rico was recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Cancer Spectrum. The data shows that Massachusetts is nearly at the elimination threshold, with a rate of 4.3 cases per 100,000 women. By contrast, states in the Southeast average nearly 10 cases per 100,000, and those in the Southwest more than 11/100,000. Mississippi has the highest rate in the nation at 14.8 cases per 100,000. Mortality rates from cervical cancer track a similar pattern with higher death rates in the Southeast and Southwest and the lowest rates in the Northeast. The worst news is that many states have seen little to no improvement over the past decade despite overall national improvements. The researchers emphasize that cervical cancer elimination is achievable if we all pay attention to the key elements of prevention: HPV vaccination, routine screening, and timely treatment. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2026-01-massachusetts-closest-cervical-cancer-southeastern.html#google_vignette https://academic.oup.com/jncics/advance-article/doi/10.1093/jncics/pkag005/8440767?login=false #cervical #cancer #hpv #vaccination"

Congratulations Australia.

Australia is nearly eliminating #cervical #cancer.
(Genital warts are likely to nearly go away, which will please most people)

Couple of things: it isn't screening, mostly. The screening isn't Pap smears, it is a look for HPV.

#Immunisation against #HPV of the more commonly nasty varieties.

I see screening for prevention of #cervical #cancer has moved on since I retired.
Some of it I think follows the Australian experience - they started HPV immunisation earlier.

https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cervical-cancer/getting-diagnosed/screening/about

One aspect not stressed there is that actually looking at the cervix is part of it! Or at least was. Odd cervix: refer/act.

Only looking at cells - cytology - if HPV is present would have seemed brave to us, 10 years ago, but seems to be the routine.

#Smoking remains a cause.

What is cervical screening?

Cervical screening uses HPV primary screening. The cervical cells are first of all tested for the HPV virus. If high risk HPV is found, the laboratory will test the sample for cell changes.

"Continued reductions in #cancermortality because of drops in smoking, better treatment, and earlier detection is certainly great news. However, this progress is tempered by rising incidence in young and middle-aged women, who are often the family caregivers, and a shifting cancer burden from men to women, harkening back to the early 1900s when #cancer was more common in women.

Another nationwide study from earlier this year found that between 1975 and 2020, almost 6 million deaths from five of the most common cancers (#breast, #cervical, #colorectal, #lung and #prostate cancer) were averted through a combination of #prevention, #screening, and improved #treatments."

Death Rate From Cancer Has Steadily Fallen in The US, Report Shows

Bad health news has a way of taking over the headlines, and while there are many dangerous and debilitating diseases and infections on the rise, there is also great progress being made, year on year.

Success: Vaccine Prevention of Cervical Cancer: The Gardasil vaccine has been instrumental in cutting the incidence of cervical pre-cancerous lesions by 80% according to a just-published CDC analysis. #cervical #cancer #precancerous #carcinomainsitu #vaccine #gardasil

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Success: Vaccine Prevention of Cervical Cancer The vaccine against the human papilloma virus, Gardasil, was first recommended for teens and those younger than 45 in 2006. Since then, this vaccine has been instrumental in cutting the incidence of cervical pre-cancerous lesions by 80% according to a just-published CDC analysis. Since the vaccine’s introduction, vaccination rates have steadily increased resulting in that dramatic 80% decline in the most dangerous pre-cancerous cervical lesions, so-called carcinoma-in-situ or CIS. This data confirms the effectiveness of Gardasil to curb the tide of the devastating cervical cancer. Though vaccination rates have risen, the latest data shows that only 61% of teens 13-15 years have received the vaccine. Since sexually-active teens can spread the infection, Gardasil is also recommended for teen boys but only 57% of them have been vaccinated. This lifesaving vaccine should be universally adopted. All teens should receive a 3 shot Gardasil course at 13 years or earlier. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/74/wr/mm7406a4.htm https://progressreport.cancer.gov/prevention/hpv_immunization #cervical #cancer #precancerous #carcinomainsitu #vaccine #gardasil"
