Wellington’s slim lead over Christchurch in the #CityNatureChallenge is now down to just **210 observations**. I expect we’ll see some back and forth out at front through the day.

If you took photos of wild species between Friday and Monday and haven’t uploaded then to #iNaturalist yet, you’ve got until the end of Sunday for them to count for the #CNC2024.

And, look at that other number. Think about how many New Zealand species you can name. Then notice that 4,200 species (!!!) have been identified so far from the observations over the four day challenge in New Zealand.

If you're not watching the #CityNatureChallenge in Aotearoa, things are heating up! We've got until the end of Sunday to upload all our observations and get all our species IDs completed.

Wellington burst out to a lead of over 2,000 observations during the four days of observing, but Christchurch has been steadily chasing them down. Wellington's only 535 observations ahead now.

Our cities are currently #9 and #10 in the Europe-Asia-Oceania-Africa competition.

City Nature Challenge 2024: Aotearoa New Zealand

It's the 2024 global City Nature Challenge! New Zealand cities are showing the world all our incredible species. Between the 26–29 April, tens of thousands of people from across the globe will all look for nature in their backyards and cities. If you live in one of the participating cities, be sure to join their project so you can get all their news and announcements. When you're in a web browser and signed in to iNaturalist NZ, you'll see a friendly "join" button near the top right of each city's project page

One of my favourite new things I learned from #CNC2024 is the identification of a weed called "petty spurge" which is my favourite new insult. I also just shout it At The Ground when I spot said weed.

Last day/hours for City Nature Challenge!

I'm not attending any scheduled events today. But I'll be bopping by Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1. Perfect weather for a Bee Quest for Habropoda laboriosa, Blueberry Digger Bee.

Final day of #CNC2024 and I've had a great time running around, taking pictures. So much respect to all the identifiers, I'm learning so much! Favourite observations today was this (probably) bristly oxtongue (Helminthotheca echioides), because when I flipped over a leaf to photograph the underside, I found a bunch of little bugs! 1 observation turned into 3.
put some effort into digging for critters today for #CNC2024 and got a couple neat microscope-mode pictures!

In the Eurasia-Africa-Oceania part of the #CityNatureChallenge, Wellington is currently sitting 2nd in the number of species and Christchurch at 7th, out of 374 cities.

It's a great start, although Melbourne has recently slipped ahead of Christchurch. We'll have to do something about that.
