So for months I thought this was a tire track, but today I noticed it goes from one bush to another, which is atypical of tire tracks. Took a closer look and sure enough... it's an ant highway. Either end points toward a large (3-4 feet tall) nest.

I didn't know they did that. I guess the tiny missteps of so many ants had gradually scuffed marks through the gravel, leaving a clear trail through the thin grass growing amongst it. Wild.

Ran into a tiny commuter during today's walk. Just a blue collar guy trying to bring home the bacon. It's easy to lose sight of the scope of things, sometimes.

Be kind, fellow humans.

A Common Oriental Trap-jaw Ant (Odontomachus simillimus) spotted at the Golf Link track in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore on 8 Feb 2025. I wouldn't want to be caught between those menacing looking jaws.

Those jaws are held open by an internal latch and can snap shut when sensory hairs on the jaws are touched.

This #log crosses my #walking path; every time I step over it I wonder about these #ants. Best I can tell is that it's some kind of superhighway for the little dudes.

I've looked for an obvious nest on either end of the log, but they both disappear into salal growths. The log is probably 40 feet across, altogether. Quite the commute for an #ant.

Another cool find in my garden today: the weirdest looking ant I've ever found.

A new species for me, and a new species record for my garden, now at 13 Ants, 149 Hymenoptera, and 514 Insect species/taxa.
