I just finished Alan Moore's "The Great When". Nominally an urban magic novel, it lulls you by appearing to follow the typical storyline for such works, but all the time you get the feeling that something is slightly off ... but unable to put your finger on it. Then, in the last gasps of the book, it turns around and stabs you between the eyes [and, most annoyingly, leaves Chekov's gun on the mantlepiece!].
This is the first book in a new series by the author of "Watchmen" and "V-for Vendetta".
The language is rich, and I found myself pausing many times to think about and enjoy his phrasing. The main characters are engaging but not necessarily likeable. I would much rather sit down for a beer with some of the peripherals...
Definitely worth reading and thinking about.
