Black Grape's debut album “It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah” 1995
#BlackGrape was the next venture for pals #ShaunRyder and #Bez following their previous #Madchester band #HappyMondays. They updated their sound, interweaving heavier rhythms with dabs of Jamaican flavor and #HipHop, giving it a cut-and-paste feel even when not using actual samples. But the music was just as jubilant - it’s #psychedelic! It’s a party! It’s what I like to imagine #JeffersonStarship might have become if they hadn’t fallen to the perils of #70s #California. Speaking of…I’ve always taken the album title as a reference to Ryder’s on-and-off addictions, but I’m also pretty sure he was using back then; maybe it was aspirational. But there would be plenty of time in the next millennium for dealing with such things.
