Firefighters rescue injured seabird desperately pecking at hospital door

An injured seabird sought help by pecking on a German hospital’s emergency room door. The black cormorant had a triple fishing hook stuck in its beak when it showed up Sunday at a hospital in the northern city of Bremen. The local fire department said medical staff and firefighters worked together to remove the hook and treat the wound. They then released the bird in the hospital park. The fire department said in a statement that cormorants rarely approach people, and only do so when in extreme distress. It said a hook can cause infection, pain and even starvation.

Have you written about birds? If not, what ideas come to mind?

I haven't included birds yet. But I keep wanting to add a certain local pizza parlor and their herd of turkey vultures to a fictional town I've set a couple of stories in.

I have no idea why anyone would eat there.

What are your favorite fictional birds? Or which one do you hate the most?

For my favorite, the mynah bird from the 2nd book in the Three Investigators series: The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot, where 7 talking parrots give clues. The mynah birds knows *all* of them . . . great fun!

For a bonus favorite, I'm going to go with this parrot drawn by Alan Beck, his bestest pirate on his shoulder.

Do you see birds often where you live?

We have a protected wetland [swamp] out the back window. So a lot of water birds including herons.

We have a local pizza parlor that has a colony of turkey vultures that hang out on and around their dumpster. I keep thinking I will immortalize this in a story.

Also a lot of other raptors: mostly hawks, but we occasionally spot bald eagles. Ravens, too. And crows.

Birds: ay or nay? And why?

Enthusiastic Aye! After 2011, I became much more interested in birds (and birding) after really enjoying the movie The Big Year, starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson.
It's based on the novel by Mark Obmascik--The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession.

And our house in Delaware is less urban and has more birds to view than downtown Ithaca did.

Definitely here and ready to talk turkey!

Today my joy comes from finally getting comfortable with using my Nama--the nut milk machine I invested in. We assembled the ingredients and tried it out . . . WOW! It made cashew milk (we have a *lot* of raw cashews) in just ONE minute. Four ingredients: cashews, water, pinch of salt, and [oddly] dates for sweetning/fiber.

Fantastic!

Accidental wildlife photography… through the window, coffee still in hand… and this tiny blue tit posing like it’s auditioning for a nature documentary.

Soft winter light, a fat ball swinging gently… and one very determined featherball hanging on like a pro.
Sometimes the best shots happen when you don’t even try :o)

I don't know who it was I saw mention Merlin bird sound identification app in my timeline, maybe @moonrabbit? But I'm glad they did! I can identify blackbirds and wrens by sound, now! Robins too! #birds #birdwatching #birdIsTheWord
The crows and the jackdaws live about three terraced houses apart, with us in the middle.
