@ben

I didn't know either of these things. Thanks for the tip!

I've installed Thunderbird via F-Droid so I can try this out. I'm told it supports XMPP and Matrix too, which might allow me to get rid of a bunch of the apps I'm currently juggling on my ancient and increasingly decrepit Android.

@scottjenson I'm pessimistic up to the point where you have to have to assume it will fail completely. Just as XMPP and MAIL failed.

The only encryption implementation with success were the approaches where the UX can be controlled centrally.

For MAIL there is #autocrypt now, it is astonishing how good it is – but email is still not encypted today.

XMPP/Jabber has OMEMO, but stillt struggles with client adoption and it isn't omnipresent.

Where it worked: #DeltaChat and #Signal both using a central library that can make sure encryption reliably lands at peoples fingertips.

oh shit, with #Autocrypt v2 being worked on, that means #Deltachat and other chatmail systems will have post-quantum security and full perfect forward secrecy support!

that means basically the only lingering issues I had with Deltachat as a personal messenger are completely gone

seriously go to
https://delta.chat/ right now and try it out

#Autocrypt should allow for possible >10d delays.

(Perhaps warn or something I suppose.)

The use-case of snailmail transport of messages isn't necessarily covered in less depending on adverse conditions.

(I am seeing it in the optic of NNCP midpoints & tertiary endpoints that aren't owned by the NNCP nodes necessarily. Perhaps family members or whatever.)

@Tutanota will you finally implement autocrypt with their V2 ? PFS and PQC ? i know your own already do this but pgp support would allow us to talk to other people securely not only tuta user or the incredibly not convenient password.

Regarding @thunderbird, that is applicable to you too. In https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/openpgp-thunderbird-howto-and-faq#w_does-thunderbird-support-autocrypt it is claimed: "Thunderbird does not support the Autocrypt philosophy that encryption should be fully automatic" Well, what is the advantage of an email non-being encrypted, always that the two senders support OpenPGP (and share the public keys) or whatever common encryption method? Of course, if one does not have a public key, I understand it is impossible to make automatic encryption.

Further, I have another question: in the link above claims: 'At this time, Thunderbird doesn't support the "Gossip" feature.'
However, on the Autocrypt webpage, it appears a table where it seems thunderbird supports gossip. (https://docs.autocrypt.org/dev-status.html). Then?
