A very important piece that expresses the concerns that many of us on the #AutismSpectrum have about the efforts to divide our community.

Dividing Up the Autism Spectrum Will Not End the Way You Think

The Lancet’s proposal to create a new label of “profound autism” serves only to distract us from the work of ensuring that all autistic people have everything they need to thrive.

It's #AutismPride day.

Pride, is both a celebration and an affirmation of our existence. It is the latter for me that is all important. As someone who very late in life realised I was autistic, I had spent a lifetime knowing only that I was different, but not how. It was a hole in me that I couldn't fill, a sense of something missing, a lack that always felt more about how broken I was than anything. As a consequence it became something to hide, to mask and to be ashamed of. It was my dirty, dark secret and the core of my existence. The knowledge that no matter what, I was wrong and always would be.

Realising I was autistic, filled that hole. It taught me to see the difference as, if not always positive, at least natural and normal. I was never broken, I was just trying to function in the world in the way that was right for me. A world, that in so many ways, was hostile to that, unforgiving about difference and those who stood out too far. I had, in fact, been simply trying my best with the tools that I had, the tools that came naturally to me, even if no one else ever saw that.

Having a day to remember this. To remember the past and the pain and the blind struggle. To remember how far I've come and how much I've learnt and have yet to learn (because finally I can). To be able to stand out and say "yes, I am", is important not just for us, but others walking this path. For too long being autistic was a dark and terrible secret. For too long its truth has been hidden behind ignorance and misinformation. That is what days like this are for and why they are so important. To show the world that autism and being autistic, is nothing to hide and nothing to fear. Happy pride day everyone.

Happy Autistic Pride Day my fellow Autistic queerdos!

https://autisticprideday.org/about-us/what-is-autistic-pride/

Remember that you're *awesome*, regardless what other people tell you. You're not 'too sensitive', 'too lazy', or 'too something'; it's not your fault if you're exhausted for living in a world that is so hostile to us.

I hope you always have opportunities to stay true to yourself, and perhaps that one day you won't need to mask any more!  I hope that one day we all will enjoy acceptance instead of being 'assessed'. I hope that one day they won't especially discriminate any more against Black and Indigenous Autistics, those that don't fall into the old 'male autistic' cliché, against elder and other marginalised Autistics.

So let us all celebrate some #autismPride on this #autismPrideDay ♾️   Go and listen to your favourite music, engage with some of your dearest interests, eat your favourite food, and don't forget to stim with your favourite stimtoy 💜

<♾️ you all

Want an alternative to the infinity as a symbol for autism? Maybe because it's too much like the Métis flag? :metis_flag: Or maybe because the symbolism doesn't vibe with you? Or maybe you just want more options?

I've been on a recent quest for an autistic pride flag that I actually like. I showed some draft designs to friends and discovered none of us actually liked the infinity symbol for autism
😯.

So, I got to thinking about alternative symbols. I think flags and the like are an opportunity to tell outsiders about what we’re about. One thing I want to convey about being autistic is that the autistic spectrum does NOT mean a gradient from autistic to non-autistic. Here’s a visualization I like:
laconciergepsychologist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/autism-spectrum.jpg

So I got to thinking about how to visualize that polar graph. I realized a nautilus shell works on a number of levels!
1. To convey the polar graphs in a stylized way
2. A fractal shape keeps with the theme of infinity
3. We autistic folks tend to live in our metaphorical shells =)

Best as I can tell from google text & image searches, the nautilus is not used by any minority groups or geographic regions for flags. A handful of businesses and software projects have nautilus logos, and I've tried to stay distinct from them.

Attached are - two flag designs using the rainbow nautilus, and two versions of just of the nautilus icon if you wanna stick it on other things or refine it. I'm releasing these as public domain so remix as desired!

Autistic Pride Day is coming up! Here's four new autistic flag options \o/

I've put together some autistic-specific pride flags because too many autistic-specific flags fall into one of two pitfalls:
1. using a solid white infinity symbol - the Métis (a major Indigenous group) have been using this as their flag design since 1815
:metis_flag:
2. using a solid yellow background - this is an intersex flag thing

Here are some alternatives I've made that don't do either!
💛

1. Golden infinity loop on white background. I took the golden infinity off the 2023 Autistic Progress Pride Flag and stuck it on a white background in the style of rainbow-infinity-on-white-background neurodiversity flags. Gold is used for autism because Au=Gold. (I'm not sure I'm the first one to do this design.)

2. Replacing the infinity on the red-yellow-green flag. I took the 2021 red-yellow-green autistic flag and replaced the solid white infinity symbol with a red infinity loop. Red is another common autism flag colour used as a contrast to the blue of Autism Speaks (bc fuck Autism Speaks).

3. Recolour the Disability Pride Flag to make it autistic. Remember how Au=Gold for autism? Let's just go all in. This has gold (Au), titanium (Ti), sulphur (S), titanium (Ti), and carbon (C) for an AuTiSTic colour palatte.

4. Golden infinity + Disability Pride Flag. Sticking the infinity right on the disability pride flag was too busy so I moved the stripes to the corners.

All flags are public domain. Feel free to remix and reuse as desired. SVGs are on Wikimedia Commons along with more alternatives by other people:

I'm extremely excited to see Humanistic rabbi Tzemah Yoreh from tCity Congregation in #NYC featured as a guest on my favorite podcast, #JudaismUnbound!!!

The topic is #Neurodiversity and broader inclusion issues in the Jewish community.
