Lew Ashwal of U. Witwatersrand died this week. Over decades, his scholarship helped shape modern thinking on magmatic processes and global crustal evolution (from Grant Bybee).

I remember Lew very patiently helping a young geochemist (myself) understand why mountains made of anorthosite were such a difficult and interesting problem to solve.

The permit was granted to #Greenland Anorthosite #Mining, which is developing a site in western Greenland. The company is backed by French investment firm the Jean Boulle Group & state investment funds in both Greenland & #Denmark.
#Anorthosite—a white rock composed mainly of aluminium, micro silica, & calcium—is similar to the material brought back by #NASA's Apollo missions. #GAM plans to ship crushed anorthosite to the fibreglass industry, where it could replace kaolin as a sustainable input.

Scientists Unveil Mysterious Origins of Earth’s Largest Igneous Rocks

A geochemistry study led by Rice advances our understanding of ancient rock formations. A team of researchers has advanced our understanding of massif-type anorthosites, mysterious rocks that formed exclusively during Earth's middle history. These igneous formations, rich in plagioclase and spannin

Kamestastin Crater's composition of anorthosite makes it one of the most moon-like places on Earth.

The water aside, the physical characteristics of the crater itself resembles strongly those found on the moon.

Thanks for the tip, Dr. Tanya Harrison!

Next day went to the South Harris Meta-igneous Complex.

Garnet amphibolite, (metagabbro) and #pseudotachylite.

Fresh #anorthosite has distinctive mauve colouration but weathers to white/pale cream, occasionally showing fine deformation banding.

Garnet replaced by symplectites of clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, spinel, and plagioclase in a mafic layer within anorthosite, Sognefjord, Norway (Caledonian Upper Jotun Nappe).
