The second and more important issue is that the American rail network and trains are in pitiful condition.
It's obvious that the vast network of rail tracks is barely maintained and definitely not upgraded.
No surprise freight trains regularly derail.
Same with trains themselves. They're ancient.
To Europeans it's like going back in the 50s and I can't imagine what a Japanese tourist would think.

There are 2 issues with Amtrack.
First they're clearly not willing to put any money in their "first class".
Microwaved frozen food on plastic plates, no wifi, restrooms worst than the public restrooms in Chicago Union Station (I kid you not)...
It's clearly a rip-off.

As a strong supporter of trains over planes it pains me to say it but the so-called first class in the Amtrack train was so crappy that it made flying in Economy a joy and a pleasure.
TSA included.

Fuck yeah, trains!
Amtrak is slashing executive bonuses to give out $900 apiece to over 18,000 rank-and-file workers

Nothing to do with helicopters. (I think Amtrak is America's best kept secret: Comfortable large seats, lots of leg room, excellent food, no stress)
USA: "Amtrak holiday travel bookings surge as riders plan ahead"
Railway Supply has the November 22, 2025 article:

Spannend zu sehen, wie #Amtrack (US Bahn Unternehmen) mit einer banalen Schritt-für-Schritt Strategie langsam besser und erfolgreicher wird und durch ihre Unauffälligkeit unter dem Radar der Autolobby und der US Faschisten bleibt. Da kann sich die Deutsche Bahn etwas von abschneiden.

Not to state the obvious but if the #US really wanted to ‘boost manufacturing’ a mass investment in #Amtrack would be a great way to do that.
Trains need to be built, after 30/40 years or so they need replaced, not to mention intermittent overhaul, which all takes skilled workers, and requires steel and other heavy industries. The US could easily sustain a substantial rail engineering sector indefinitely, if it so wanted.
You'd also help save the planet as a bonus.
