"Mine" by Sally Partridge is a fantastic book. It's YA in that it deals with teenagers, and it's also very much an adult book, a hard read, dealing with difficult subject matter in an unflinching, clear-eyed way.
It switches between 2 first person narratives. Kayla, 16, a skateboarder, flautist & lover of comics, and Fin, 18, a talented rapper who is getting known in the music scene.
It's set in Cape Town.
Both teens are severely let down by the adults in their lives. Parents and teachers either neglect them (Kayla), or actively abuse them (Fin). This leads to self hatred and self sabotage in ways that are familiar and tragic.
Kayla in particular reads as neurodivergent, with severe rejection sensitivity.
CW slut shaming, bullying, sexual abuse, sex with dubious consent, emotional abuse, domestic violence.
I found this a tough read. The ending didn't entirely satisfy me, but I thought this story is exceptionally well written.
