How to use Mastodon’s Tweetdeck-style Advanced Web Interface | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

Hmm, not too happy with the #advancedwebinterface update. It's so big and clunky and now I have to scroll left and right so see all 4 of my columns.

0/10 ⭐ - do not like.

If you use the #Mastodon Advanced Web Interface with more than two optional columns, and would like to be able to see the edit box and the post you're replying to at the same time, you might be interested in this 👉 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/32756

@cheryanne Ah, ta, yep that makes some sense. The present [& many prior] aus.social Masto versions support *creating* Markdowned text, but not *displaying* it natively, in the web client [ie, viz browsers]. Presumably your app is nice enough to add some additional capability.

Anyway, this short-lived test is now unexpectedly, disappointingly, abandoned following my shock [re]discovery of one undesirable aspect of aus.social's setup that drove me away yonks ago. Not only the 3K char limit, not only the lack of using the #GlitchSoc fork, but also the silliness that when using the #AdvancedWebInterface view here, NO Notifications icon activity occurs ***at all***. I mean, that's so sucky. It works ok in the default view, but i don't wanna hafta be limited to that reduced functionality. So hi ho hi ho, tis back to infosec i go... yep, tis a PITA its Notification icon won't clear [in AWI], but at least it works in the first place.

Sigh, why is everything in LtU&E always so disappointing? 🤷‍♀️ 😜

Come on, Mastodon, you gotta stop turning off #advancedWebInterface when you log me out

Why can't you remember one stupid setting? Looks idiotic to have one 4 inch column down the middle of a 20 inch screen

@Susan60 I actively curate.

  • i have a sadly long blocklist that still gets more entries than i'd like, coz it seems there's still too many nasty peeps about who somehow hate peeps like me
  • I have many Filters, & i tend to them frequently, finessing & fussing here & there.
  • i follow a large number of #hashtags [https://infosec.exchange/@MsDropbear425/111273654875218881]
  • initially i followed no actual peep accounts, only news & tech bot accounts, but as the months became a year & more & i learned that offsetting my first dot-point there's also happily some nice peeps about, began also following several peeps.
  • until a few days ago i used a 3-column browser-based #AdvancedWebInterface, with "everything" just in my Home t/l
  • then i decided to try a couple of #Lists, & modified my AWI to be 5-columns to suit, with the accounts in the two newly pinned List columns notionally hidden in my Home column... except that Masto's poor design fails to hide all such posts if they also include hashtags i'm following. Atm i still regard my expanded view as being on probation.

@helpers One of the distinct disadvantages, afaict, with the #Friendica web UI [ie, using a browser] compared to Mastodon, is the inability to see / access / use the Compose Post box unless one is scrolled to the top of the timeline. In Masto, with both its default & #AdvancedWebInterface UI views, the Compose box is always visible, hence available, regardless of any other timeline status. Tbh i find this restriction really frustrating in F.

For various reasons in F i prefer the Vier UI display option over Frio, but afaict my objection pertains to both.

Is there possibly some option buried in Settings that i might have missed, which when enabled makes the Compose Post box available any time, eg, from a top bar link as a popup modal?

Is there some AddOn for this that Friendica server owners could install that remedies this problem?

In absence of anything better, my inefficient workaround is to open a second tab of my F account, in which i then access the box to compose & send my impromptu post, without disturbing my position in my scrolled timeline in the original tab [eg, first thing each morning i scroll down & review all new posts since yesterday, but often think of something i want to say or ask that's not tied to any individual post i might be contemporaneously reading atm, six hours down my timeline].

If anyone is using Bluesky, and looking for a multi-column interface, https://deck.blue/ is very nice. Mastodon's "advanced web interface" could pick up some tips from there, I feel.

How com I can't move the 'Getting Started' column (really would like to actually pin the #Explore column) in the #Mastodon #AdvancedWebInterface? I want to set it up with Explore > Home > Notifications.
Why is the #AdvancedWebInterface for #Mastodon not working in #Firefox? Any ideas @paula ?
