An old photo I found while exploring around Activeworlds dating back from 2008. This platform needs to make a comeback!

Some screencaps I took on my exploration around Activeworlds the other day: A place called Zelena, a town with a bit of a European flair. The timestamp for this build was probably late 2000s, early 2010s.

While exploring an old virtual world client called Activeworlds, I came across an old build from early 2000s that gives me mall vibes.

25 years ago today, I finally registered and became an #ActiveWorlds citizen, and it set the course of the rest of my internet life. I'll never forget the friends I made there, and how it led me to where I am now.

Interesting session with the Computer Arts Society / bcs this evening... learning about curation of computer art. Also thinking about / hearing about #metaverse and environments like #SecondLife and #ActiveWorlds (again! been talking about those on @gamesatwork_biz for a looooong time). Fascinating. Video will be up on YouTube later I think.

@kiki ueber aol bin ich auch ende der 90er ins internet, aber ich hab nach einiger zeit versucht "auszubrechen"
Hab da nach vituellen welten gesucht und #activeworlds gefunden.

We mentioned on last week's show that our co-host @michaelrowe01 had a video of a Virtual World on a cell phone from over a decade ago --- here it is - https://youtu.be/Xq7RIoRFUgw?feature=shared

Back in the mid 90s I encountered this extremely early and crude VR world engine that would play in a browser. It was called #AlphaWorlds and was later changed to #ActiveWorlds it was interesting because it allowed you to create your own virtual space which I found quickly engrossing.

I had this strange encounter, one of those kinds of spooky 'internet' ghost things. I found some empty lot virtual miles away from any trace of in game civilization or other active people in the server. I spent days building a home and scripting doors/WAVs and all the general tackiness that made the 90s internet experience.

I thought I saw another avatar once, as if they were watching me, I dismissed it as a glitch or some random 'object' left behind by someone. Sometime went on before I saw it again, then one day they were standing right behind me when I turned around. It scared me so bad I jumped out of my desk chair and yelled.. which is sad because the early 3D graphics were terrible and extremely limited numbers of polygons of 'grey' aliens that were barely recognizable.

It ended up being a friend that saw my BBS post about trying out this new 'alphaworlds' thing and came to check it out without saying anything, but I remember that experience forever.
