Here's our "one question" for the #akelect 2026 #akgov & #akleg candidates. Art 8, Sec 2 of the #AKConst requires that "all natural resources belonging to the State" be developed "for the maximum benefit of its people." Do you think the state's oil & Permanent Fund resources are in compliance?
πŸ€” While we disagree strongly with Marks on the PFD, we agree more K-12 funding should be raised locally. But doing so unequally would cost the state $80mil in reduced federal impact aid treated as a state contribution. There are also #AKconst issues tied to disparate funding. #akleg https://www.adn.com/opinions/2025/06/13/opinion-alaska-communities-deserve-the-choice-to-expand-education-funding/
The PFC has only earned enough cash to cover the 5% POMV draw + inflation proofing once in the last six years (FY21). Even the PFC doesn't project doing so again anytime in the next 10 years. Their solution? Amend the #AKConst to open a back door to the corpus to cover the difference. #akleg
🀦 It's this simple. The current #AKConst protects the corpus. The proposal described in this op-ed amends that provision to create a backdoor that allows the #akleg to draw from the corpus anytime the PFC fails to achieve the targeted 5% return. They are coming for the corpus. https://buff.ly/SrD70S4
After draining the SBR, CBR & most of the PFD in their effort to maintain govt spending w/o impacting the Top20%, #NonRez & #OilCos, some are pushing the #akleg to open a back door to the Permanent Fund corpus. But b/c it requires a change to the #AKConst, this time, #AKfams will be able to say NO.

🀦 The trade group for the Top20% wants to amend the #AKConst to ensure back-door access to the Permanent Fund corpus to cover spending even if the Permanent Fund doesn't earn enough to cover the #akleg POMV draw (which it hasn't in 5 of the last 6 yrs). https://buff.ly/FBLxa2T

Opinion: The time to protect the Alaska Permanent Fund is now

The Commonwealth North board of directors unanimously supports transitioning the Permanent Fund to an endowment model.

Some spin SJR14 - to amend the #AKConst - as a way of "protecting" the #PermanentFund. But it's not. Instead, it creates a back door to access the currently Constitutionally protected corpus whenever the Fund fails to earn enough to cover the #akleg POMV draws. That's occurred 5 of the last 6 yrs!!
The current #AKConst provides an ABSOLUTE prohibition to raiding the Permanent Fund corpus. SJR14 would enable it when the APFC fails to generate earnings = to the POMV draw (which has happened 5 of the last 6 years). #NORaidsOnTheCorpusEVER #VoteNo #akleg https://buff.ly/8Gdq8IP
