«#Meloni’s government has already moved to curb some of the judiciary’s investigative powers: it has curtailed the use of #wiretaps, limited officials’ liability for financial damage to the state, abolished the crime of abuse of office, relaxed rules against #InfluencePeddling, and even floated the idea of requiring advance notice before police searches»

Meloni wanted to tame Italy’s prosecutors. She may end up empowering them instead

On March 22 and 23, Italians will vote in a referendum intended to curb the power of the country’s  prosecutors. But the reform championed by prime minister Giorgia Meloni could produce the  opposite effect, giving prosecutors even greater control over Italy’s justice system.

Procession for No, burned photos of Meloni, Nordio, and Trump. The American flag is on fire.

An image of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni holding the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, depicted wearing a muzzle, was burned during the procession currently taking place in Rome for “No” to a referendum on the reform of the justice system. A second image, also set on fire, depicts the Prime Minister shaking hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: with the slogan “No to your genocide, 75,000 civilians killed, 2 million displaced.” This happened in an instant when the procession reached Piazza dell’Esquilino. The demonstrators, evidently unsatisfied, then also set fire to two billboards, one depicting the flag of the United States and one with a photograph of American President Donald Trump. At the same time, a group of protesters displayed a banner reading “Against Imperialist Aggressions – Defend Socialist Cuba.”

The demonstration promoted by Potere al Popolo (Power to the People) involved various groups, from student collectives (such as Osa and Cambiare Rotta) to movements for Palestine, including the Global Movement for Gaza, as well as movements fighting for housing, social centers, and the Usb. Among the slogans chanted by the protesters who gathered in Piazza della Repubblica (“Vote No, Giorgia Meloni, leave!” but also “Hands Off Iran” and “Hands Off Socialist Cuba” and also “Crosetto returns to Dubai”), there were also “No to the referendum, no to war, no to the murderous government.” To open the procession was the banner “No to the referendum, no to war, no to the murderous government,” signed by the “Committee for Social No.” Following this was the banner of Potere al Popolo, with the words “Say No to the Worst Italy, No to War, No to the Meloni Government.” Some demonstrators showed posters with Prime Minister Meloni shaking hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, photographs of Bossi, Salvini, and Santanchè with the words “Say No to the Worst Italy.” Among the flags, in addition to those of Potere al Popolo, there were also those of Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran, and the flag of Peace. In addition to the inevitable Palestinian flag, which has become a symbol of struggle for the antagonists.

#Italy will soon vote on a #ConstitutionalReform of the judiciary, yet if you ask most voters what #referendum is actually aboit, answers are often vague. Proposal backed by the gov of #GiorgiaMeloni focuses on separating the careers of judges & prosecutors & restructuring the bodies that govern the magistracy.
But beneath the technical language of constitutional reform lies a deeper concern about the nature of #InstitutionalTrust in Italy 🇮🇹

3️⃣ Unsubstantiated:

❌ No impact assessment.
❌ No proof it works.
Even the European Data Protection Supervisor @EDPS warns it violates EU law and puts #privacy & safety at risk.

This reform won’t protect people. It’ll criminalise solidarity, erode democracy, and put everyone under surveillance.

Civil society calls on MEPs:

❌ Reject the Europol Regulation
✅ Protect rights, privacy & democracy.
