Love this post from my fellow (m)otherboard godmother Emily Best. Don't call them visionaries. Don't call them technologists. Call them “inevitablists”.

📖 The AI Con — How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want (Emily M. Bender e Alex Hanna)
✅ O undécimo #livro deste ano fez que um #AIskeptic como eu se assumisse como #NoAI: https://www.overdrive.com/media/11091109/the-ai-con

Trained on thousands of years of writing and discourse about astronomy, what would an LLM created in 1633 have to say about Galileo's heretical view that the planets revolved around the sun, not the earth?
This week's AI paper find: “Theory Is All You Need: AI, Human Cognition, and Causal Reasoning”.
I am so very grateful to be leaving behind the need to listen to otherwise smart and charming coworkers blathering about how they are using AI and/or excited to learn more about AI.
I've done my best to express my skepticism, persistently yet in a relatively mild and respectful way. It's been hard going.
(Context: I have just been laid off and therefore am retiring early, basically all good but I'm having a lot of feelings about a lot of things)
And its definitely always worth reading Ed Zitron. His new article is damning, angry and full of 'I told you so', but he really did so hey.

I remain an AI skeptic, particularly in the creative side. But over the past few months have found utility in GPTs. Mostly in the sorts of things that aren't easily searched.
Here's an example from this weekend:
"What are the devices called which create a uniform base for mounting a porch light on a house with siding"
#ChatGPT can now tell you what it knows about you, based on your chats. This isn't perfect. But it's surprisingly accurate and I imagine intentionally flattering. Aw shucks!
I may be tinkering with AI, but I'm still an #AIskeptic and leery of #AIshit. And I'm not NOT OK with 'em scraping the world over and over.
