Trained on thousands of years of writing and discourse about astronomy, what would an LLM created in 1633 have to say about Galileo's heretical view that the planets revolved around the sun, not the earth?

This week's AI paper find: “Theory Is All You Need: AI, Human Cognition, and Causal Reasoning”.

I am so very grateful to be leaving behind the need to listen to otherwise smart and charming coworkers blathering about how they are using AI and/or excited to learn more about AI.

I've done my best to express my skepticism, persistently yet in a relatively mild and respectful way. It's been hard going.

(Context: I have just been laid off and therefore am retiring early, basically all good but I'm having a lot of feelings about a lot of things)

And its definitely always worth reading Ed Zitron. His new article is damning, angry and full of 'I told you so', but he really did so hey.

I do not know how to budget for “Hopefully AI can help with this.” #AI #AISkeptic
This #AI conversation seems to be "I am spending all this time setting up AI tools in order to save time doing my tasks!" Nothing like engineers to spend lots of time saving time. #AISkeptic
Painful work day. If one more person says something like “Cursor could have done that” when it would have taken me longer to explain what I wanted it to do than just do it myself, I may lose it. #AI #LLMs #CursorAI #AISkeptic

I remain an AI skeptic, particularly in the creative side. But over the past few months have found utility in GPTs. Mostly in the sorts of things that aren't easily searched.

Here's an example from this weekend:

"What are the devices called which create a uniform base for mounting a porch light on a house with siding"

#AIskeptic #ChatGPT #GPT

#ChatGPT can now tell you what it knows about you, based on your chats. This isn't perfect. But it's surprisingly accurate and I imagine intentionally flattering. Aw shucks!

I may be tinkering with AI, but I'm still an #AIskeptic and leery of #AIshit. And I'm not NOT OK with 'em scraping the world over and over.

Aside: you can tell the AI productivity boom isn't materializing when GitHub, a company that is aggressively rolling out fancy AI bots to assist with development, isn't using said AI bots to detect obvious duplicate security advisory entries based on text similarity comparison (something LLMs should be good at), nor automatically review PRs removing obvious duplicate entries.
