Fun fact: #Alberta did not require #DriversLicenses until some years' later.

IIRC we already had ~30,000 #MotorVehicles by the time we got around to licensing private vehicle owners. Biggest concern to push for licensing was safety: too many people dying by colliding with #trains at uncontrolled crossings.

No actual drivers' #education required, though, so I'm still unclear as how this was to help out. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Alas no #Hansard here prior to #Lougheed so old #news clippings are all we really have. โ˜น๏ธ

Licenses only required for commerial use/professional drivers.

@LeslieBurns

I wish we still had non-mega #hardware stores around here but if we do, I am unaware of them. โ˜น๏ธ

A quasi-related story for you: decades ago, our first (IIRC) big box hardware store dropped down into #Edmonton (on St Albert Trail). It was called Eagle Hardware.

Now I don't know the *actual* reason they failed so quickly, but I can tell you that it was blatantly obvious they'd done zero research on Canadian, and also specifically Albertan, product requirements.

Zero #Robertson screws or screwbits. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
At least one HUGE aisle full of #rat traps. ๐Ÿ™„

Both these points remain hilarious to me.

The staff were, however, polite and *attempted* to be helpful, which is not always the default today in other big box stores.

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
Once he reached Fort Colvile in safety, the artist Paul Kane joined the outgoing Express and travelled up the Columbia River toward the mountain pass that would carry him east to the Athabasca River and #Edmonton House, on the North #Saskatchewan. #Journeys #WestOfTheMountains #ABHistory #YorkFactoryExpress https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/paul-kane-columbia/

Great but difficult read from ECAMP.

As important as it is to know and share history worth celebrating, now more than ever we must remember the ugly parts of our history too.

Edmonton, Alberta, and Canada are built on a whole lot of racism by a whole lot of racist people. We must learn and acknowledge that before we can hope to pretend we're past it (we aren't, not even close).

Do you remember the great oil price crash of 2014-2016? I sure do. A 70 per cent drop in global crude prices brought the expansion of Alberta oil sands projects to a halt. I worked in the industry at the time, and the crash severely curtailed my employment options. I was unemployed for nine months

@mwshook

That's very cool! โค๏ธ

Reminds me of this story I ran across when working as a rural reporter just *after* a major anniversary -- no one had thought to contact the local paper nowadays, but in its day, this little hamlet and the meteorite/upper atmospheric studies being performed there made it briefly world-famous when the astronomer not only spotted Sputnik, but managed to photograph it, too! ๐Ÿ™‚
