THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
From Fort Assiniboine, the outgoing #YorkFactoryExpress made their way across the Athabasca Portage to Edmonton House, travelling over one of the worst horse roads in the entire district. #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #ABHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/sixth-leg/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
Most people who joined the HBC from old England arrived by London Ship, and for Robert Campbell, of Fort Selkirk in the Yukon, his sailing journey west was no different than many others. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #Manitoba https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/london-ships/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
Fort St James was the centre of the HBC business in Northern #BC, and it was the place from which the HBC men began their four-month-long journey south to Fort #Vancouver #WA every year. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #BCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-st-james-2/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In the fall of 1847, clerk Augustus Peers arrives at the Peel River Post to take charge of the place. Today, this is Fort McPherson, and it stands just west of the estuary of the mighty Mackenzie River where it flows into the Arctic Sea. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #NWT https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/peels-river-post/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
George McDougall travelled out and in in every York Factory Express until he died, suddenly, at Lesser Slave Lake in 1849. In life he was a bit of a rogue (as can be seen in this post), but it seems to me that everyone liked him. #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #PeaceRiver https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/george-mcdougall/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1852, James Anderson, who was in charge of the Mackenzie's River district, took a boat to the north, along the Mackenzie River, to pick up the stash of goods at Fort Norman, south of the Ramparts. From its closeness to the river bank, Fort Norman often flooded when the river backed up because of river jams at the Ramparts. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #NWT https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-norman/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
An early road built by the pioneers of #WA Territory brought emigrants from the west end of the Oregon Trail at Fort Nez Perces #WallaWalla, all the way around a mountain to the Willamette Valley, where in the 1840s they settled in numbers that overwhelmed the HBC men at Fort #Vancouver. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #WAHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/the-barlow-road/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
There were quite a few HBC posts in the Northern district west of the Rocky Mountains, and more than a few early North West Company posts as well. Most of these are in Northern BC, but there is more than a few in the #Yukon as well. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #BCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/historic-posts-in-the-west/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
There was no way for the York Factory Express boats to carry enough food for the men to eat on their way across the prairies, and so they must also feed themselves. They were hunters and scroungers, fortunately, and ate whatever they could find on their journey east. #Journeys #YorkFactoryExpress #Food https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/eatables/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
From Fort Chipewyan, on Athabasca Lake, the men travelled north by the Riviere des Roches toward the Slave and the Mackenzie. For some later travellers, the short Riviere des Roches caused some confusion, because it seemed to be flowing the wrong way. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NWT https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/klondike-trail-5/
