Working with a community network installation that has their own fibre, I wanted to help get connectivity to some people who are beyond the reach of the current fibre rollout.

I decided to grab some #Ericsson #RBS equipment that was gathering dust at the TIC-AC offices and at the same time, install another site that would make use of tic's #900Mhz band concession for social use.

In order to temporarily install the #LTE unit; while a new hilltop tower is in the works, some members of the radio station committee kindly converted a disused toilet room adjacent to the studio into an Ericsson cabinet :-) with some makeshift but sturdy shelves made from fresh pine, which is getting warmed slightly by the equipment, and it smells great!

It’s been a while since I last played with this, but I’m wondering if someone has a recommendation for a really good #SDR - receive only, a mix of #hamradio, #CB, #APRS…. Something with wide bandwidth so I could record say, all #FMRS or #GMRS channels at once, or listen to the whole #900Mhz #ISM band for #LoRA and #Meshtastic chatter.

I’d probably run it off a #RaspberryPi 500, so USB is preferred rather than PCI-E.

FCC Considers Alternatives to Satellite-Based GPS for 900 MHz Bandwidths

A survey and recent comments by the FCC chairman show a potential for re-organization of the bandwidth that has been the exclusive domain for UHF RAIN RFID users and other Part 15 devices.

NextNav’s Callous Land-Grab to Privatize 900 MHz

The 900 MHz band, a frequency range serving as a commons for all, is now at risk due to NextNav’s brazen attempt to privatize this shared resource. Left by the FCC for use by amateur radio operators, unlicensed consumer devices, and industrial, scientific, and medical equipment, this spectrum has...

Inside the TX SYNTH module from a Matsuhita FRM1145 NMT900 mobile phone.
So, it should tune around 880 - 915MHz or so.

The RF heart of an old CT1 analog cordless phone.
So those 3x dielectric filters are all it has for a duplexer.
2x LMX1501 PLL's for TX and RX oscillators.
MC3372 FM IF on the receive side.
Maybe I'll bother beeping it put some day.
I do have 950-1400MHz VCO's in that case... 😁

Sure, LMX1501 is rated to 1.1GHz only, but so is the MB1501 PLL and MB501 prescaler used in tons of Nokia equipment and those push fine to 1300MHz hamband.

@shk It is pretty magic. In the lean days just after the #OG #dotcomboom I was at an #embedded company for a year, and I would have done just about anything for #ble instead of our home-grown #900mhz "thesis-style" protocol. Being able to follow a tag between the sensors is 100% one of the main products we brutalized ourselves trying (and failing!) to build. Now, it costs $20 for the tracker and $5 for the sensors, on my porch overnight, with batteries that last a year.
