Physicists create laser tornado in miniature structures using synthetic magnetic field

Can light behave like a whirlwind? It turns out it can—and such "optical tornadoes" have now been created in an extremely small structure by scientists from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw, the Military University of Technology, and the Institut Pascal CNRS at Université Clermont Auvergne. This discovery opens a new pathway for creating miniature light sources with complex structures, potentially enabling the development of simpler and more scalable photonic devices in the future, for applications such as optical communication and quantum technologies. The research is published in the journal Science Advances.

Yesterday, in an after-class discussion with a student, I found myself questioning the value of the concept of emergence, and the way it is embraced not just by complexity theorists but by the sciences at large. Today I found some time to think through the argument a bit more and then boom, this blog post EMERGED. In short, I feel that the idea of emergence, and much of complexity theory in general, is just a form of “science-plaining”, where science invents its own jargon to “explain” to the humanities (and people at large) what they have known for centuries, while maintaining the untenable position that it “objectively describes the world”.

Toward Hybrid Architectures: Functional AI and the Limits of Silicon Substrates: An ontological and dynamical framework for advanced artificial cognition

This research position paper develops an ontological and dynamical framework for understanding the limits of silicon‑based artificial intelligence and the material conditions required for genuine emergent cognition. Contemporary AI systems exhibit remarkable functional capabilities, yet their digital substrates lack the continuous, energetically grounded, and self‑organizing dynamics necessary for stabilizing inner states, multiscale feedback, and coherent internal trajectories. The paper argues that consciousness‑relevant emergence is a material phenomenon that cannot be simulated or instantiated within discrete computational architectures.
