Turning caffeine into bugs, starting projects I won't finish and trying to understand this weird phenomenon called existence.

Currently working as an Software Engineering Manager at Omilia, all opinions are personal.

Very cool:

if you're using #VSCode and you program in  @ruby  @CrystalLanguage or 🐍 @Python, then you might want to use @ninoseki's #vscode_extension Mogami, which shows the latest dependencies in #Gemfile, #shards and #requirements_txt.

Keep in mind that #crystalshard checks are only working on #github repos for now though!

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

@OReillyMedia's Software Architecture collection is back on Humble Bundle. I bought the 2023 version. Wait, has it been a year already? Anyway, the books are fantastic, and it's definitely good value for money, plus it raises money for charity. I can't recommend it enough.

So #LLMs can leak their (possibly sensitive) training data [1], are guaranteed to hallucinate [2], produce "bullshit" (the technical term for indifference to veracity of statements) [3], use copious amounts of water [4] and electricity [5].

What's next? Are you going to tell me they're racist, too?

AI generates covertly racist decisions about people based on their dialect - Nature

Despite efforts to remove overt racial prejudice, language models using artificial intelligence still show covert racism against speakers of African American English that is triggered by features of the dialect.

Firefox is still better than any Chromium browser simply by virtue of Gecko being the only alternative layout engine that's seeing any widespread adoption.  If everyone moves to Chromium browsers, then Google will have de facto control over web standards and the W3C will pretty much just be a puppet org. When Servo and Lady Bird (if the project figures out their culture issues) see feature parity with modern browsers, we can talk then.

Additionally, with the death of Manfiest V2 extensions, Google is signaling how much control they're willing to exert over the Chromium project. If your Chromium browser of choice is claiming it'll continue to support Manifest V2, I'd wait until the Manifest V2 code is actually yanked out of the Chromium Project, since that'll be the true test of whether or not it's really possible to maintain support. There's a reason most Chromium browsers are just switching to their own adblockers instead.

For what it's worth, this doesn't read like PR-bullshit damage control. There are points of contention, for sure, but I do believe they are genuinely trying to improve things.

You can't go from shitshow to utopia without some steps in between, and some of those steps may not be ideal, but we may have to deal with them, in order to get where we want.
