if you put a webserver up on the internet. anywhere, hosting anything, you will see "the background radiation of the internet", and it looks like this:

Personally I think Co-op did a really good job getting out of that situation and minimising impact.

I definitely think if you have a LAPSUS$ style advanced persistent teenagers situation, tilt towards open and honest comms as those kids will use secrecy against ya. It’s 2025, it’s okay to say you got hacked, people largely understand. Also, in IR, lawyers are usually stuck in 1980 advice - it’s just advice, they ain’t yo boss.

TIL: this is a 'tamper', and it exists
@Viss I’ve had empty cans but never this.
hey anyone want a cant of coke?
@Viss PG&E needs to be taken over by the state and their C-levels buried up to their necks next to Hetch Hetchy and then have honey poured over them.
does your org use slack?
they're forcing ai on everyone, despite lots of orgs (like phobos!) deliberately turning it off. you gotta go into your settings again and turn it all off AGAIN because they flip the switch in two days.

@Viss and A”I” girlfriends. But the positive on that is that the birth rate will go way down and the gene pool will not be polluted with tech bros.

OTOH the sewers may clog.

@Viss alternative option we migrated long time ago: Mattermost
@st1nger im consideringna self hosted wire instance
@Viss can self host Mattermost https://github.com/mattermost
Mattermost

Mattermost is a secure collaboration platform for connecting your teams, tools and processes to accelerate mission-critical work. - Mattermost

@st1nger @Viss I did this at ISARA, the biggest complaint was that it wasn’t Slack (well, duh) but it worked pretty well

Biggest admin headache was DB updates during upgrades taking forever and timing out.

@Viss

Is this a setting each individual must access, or is it for people administering the slack workspace?

@dangoodin its for admins. an admin would have to go into settings and toggle all this stuff back off again

@Viss

OK, thanks. And will admins need to wait until Thursday to turn it off or can they do it now?

@dangoodin i just did my instance now, thats how i made the screenshot
@Viss Nope. We're on self-hosted @zulip, because giving a third party access to your internal information was a fucking stupid idea long before LLMs existed
@thechris @zulip whoa! i'd not heard of zulip! thats pretty great, i should look into this!
@Viss @thechris @zulip Zulip isn’t geared towards casual chitchat because everything is a thread, right? If one has a use case that includes users shitposting Mattermost would be a better fit for moving off Slack? I’m not speaking for Viss, just asking for my own communities
@kamenrunner @Viss @zulip There are streams (which control the audience, either because they subscribed to it or because an admin added them) and below that there are topics (which are threads, if you like). And (group) DMs.
We have a #FridayFun stream for shitpostings, or fixed group DMs for idle gossip.
@thechris @kamenrunner @zulip oh interesting. so zulip is more like .. email threads in a browser and not like 'a chatroom' like irc or slack or wire?
@Viss @kamenrunner @zulip No, it's definitely more chat than email. And there are native mobile and desktop apps as well, so not just in a browser.
I haven't used Slack or Mattermost much, so I can't provide a detailed comparison. Best see for yourself.
@thechris @kamenrunner @zulip i just found a youtube video. it looks like they took threading out of ms teams and basically everything is a thread, instead of a separate chatgroup like slack?
@Viss @kamenrunner @zulip It's much better than Teams, which admittedly is quite a low hurdle.
A stream could be your dev team, and for every project you could have a separate topic. Click on a topic, see only the chat messages there - click on the stream, see all messages for all topics.
Think more "tags" than "threads".

@Viss every two days. wtf.

Slack owned by salesforce was a bad idea.

@kiddcutty
Sounds like we need to add "chat client" to the list
@Viss Don't forget the part where they also raised their prices. You pay for the 'AI' whether you like it or not.
@willegible @Viss as was the style at the time (and when LLM hype flames out, they’ll keep the higher price, win-win!)
