Oh hey - ghost in the shell supposedly takes place in 2030 - then gits:sac and the follow on movie all take place then through 2034.

so 2015 was supposed to give us flying cars and hoverboards, and by 2030 we were supposed to have full-body cyborgs

but instead we got

instagram and the tide pod challenge

@Viss

bladerunner was 2019. where's my flying car?

@paul_ipv6 oh was it? neat! so we were owed clones and genetic engineering and interplanetary travel too.
And 3 seashells
@Viss @paul_ipv6
@JessTheUnstill @paul_ipv6 now that i own a bidet, can tell you, flatly, that there need to be more than 3 seashells. either that or they have like, different zones that represent different buttons.
I miss my bidet ... But my new places' water valve on its toilet is so rusted I'm too nervous to try and unscrew it to reinstall the thing...
@Viss @paul_ipv6
@JessTheUnstill @paul_ipv6 i only got one recently, and ive added it to the list of things i wish i could go back in time 20 years to tell myself about

@Viss @JessTheUnstill

every time i go to japan, i know i will be massively disappointed with my toilet when i get home.

@paul_ipv6 @JessTheUnstill i have never been but i have several friends who have gone almost exclusively to just go eat places. im super jelly :D
@paul_ipv6 @Viss I will say, their toilets are ... Intimidating

@JessTheUnstill @Viss

LOL.

i did feel somewhat... inadequate?... needing instructions for all the things on it.

@JessTheUnstill @paul_ipv6 theres a restaurant in sf ive been to a few times that has one of the 7000 dollar totos. it looks like an egg. as you approach it, it opens, mists itself, blue lights come out, and it plays birdsong. it almost looks like a cryopod from a scifi movie or a tiny spacecraft
Okay, I'd pay admission to try one of those out
@Viss @paul_ipv6
@JessTheUnstill @paul_ipv6 i bet you could get in free :D

@Viss @JessTheUnstill

i do find the level of self-indulgence of needing to pick the music i go to the bathroom to a bit much. :D

If I was shy about the sound of me peeing, I'd simply scream at the top of my lungs so nobody can hear me pee.
@paul_ipv6 @Viss
@JessTheUnstill @Viss @paul_ipv6 lack of bidets are proof this isn’t a developed nation.

@JessTheUnstill @Viss

demolition man was 2032. have a few years until we get the 3 seashells.

but we should have had lifelike owls, replicants, etc.

all we got was roombas and tomogachis.

Hey, you can "date" an AI impersonation of your favorite characters now 🙃

You have to sign up for Reality+

@Viss Instead of flying cars and cyborgs, the majority of the best technology minds of our generation were assigned to the apparently more important mission of making advertising more relevant.
@kyle yeah - all that braintrust went into getting people to see ads. man. the progress we've lost.

@Viss

Science fiction never quite what works out the way they should in the books.

;)

We are getting 1984 now, some 40 years late

@Viss

Darwin works in mysterious ways. 🤷

@Viss I think the universe of git's:sac resembles our own in many ways that I did to see when I first watched it and didn't know as much about the world. They make it sound cool but one of their gotos is having Ishikawa run a bunch of sock puppet accounts on social media to spread disinformation to hide what they are doing, a couple of their cases are just duche-bros griefing other duchebags over their virtual girlfriend AIs or whatever, the stand alone complex of the title could be compared to QAnon or Jan6 and how bits of popular media and disinformation can become self-perpetuating memes that affect the world, or even the main case at this center is about some bullshit medical fraud, like Theranos or something, mixed with some Luigi Mangione vigilantism, wrapped in "cyber" trapping.

Its been about 10y since I watched it but I bet I'd get something different out of it if I watch it again, knowing what I know now

@raven667 in todays political climate it hits SUPER DIFFERENT than it did back when it came out
@Viss I love how the discussion about hoverboards and cyborgs rapidly morphed into the one about bidet, the technology which we've had since at least Crocodile Dundee II.
@Viss Arthur C. Clarke said we would be sending folks to Jupyter almost a quarter of a century ago.

@Viss and A”I” girlfriends. But the positive on that is that the birth rate will go way down and the gene pool will not be polluted with tech bros.

OTOH the sewers may clog.
