@mattblaze My fave is a membrane keyboard making clacky Model M sounds, or a modern PC with an ST-225/251 hard disk.

Hi, friends.

I wrote an article on being a Mastodon moderator. I talk about the process, our mental health, the challenges of mutual aid, and more.

It leaves me a little vulnerable, but I think it’s an important story to tell.

If you like it, boosts are welcomed. If you have questions, feel free to reach out.

Okay, here goes…

Mark W.rites - Being a Mastodon Moderator

People ask me what it’s like to be a moderator. Our discussions reveal that a lot of what we do is a mystery. So, I’m gonna lay it out for you. Specifically ab…

@KitsuneVixi @mcc ugh, sorry, I should have said the VM is running 138.0.4, not 139. It was like 5am when I posted that, very eepy.

I couldn't replicate the issue in 128 ESR on the same system, either.

@KitsuneVixi @mcc Could be. I spun up a Debian Trixie VM with 139 right from the Mozilla apt source and Plasma 6.3.4, and it doesn't happen there, either.

It’s called optimization.

How Convenience Kills Curiosity

I’ve been thinking about the death of curiosity. Remember when you had to figure out how a new piece of software worked by poking around its menus? When finding an obscure fact meant wandering through library stacks, accidentally discovering three unrelated interesting things along the way? When getting somewhere

I very much get a "we just discovered radium and want to put it in everything" vibe from this whole generative AI bubble.

(Including the thing where companies used to slap the word "radium" on existing products even though they thankfully did not actually have any radioactive materials. Like "radium butter".)

@KitsuneVixi @mcc Tested it on FF 138.0.4 on Win10, it adjusts the tab size on a 1280x1080 window when you get enough tabs to fill the header bar that they start scrolling. Did not get it to happen on 128.9 ESR on Debian 12 with KDE 5.27. On that system, it only shows the speaker icon when hovering over the site icon. It shows "playing" or "muted" under the tab title. I should note the screen on the Debian system is 900x1600 portrait mode. Maybe that changes its function. 🤷‍♀️
@paul This is how I had to learn Maude was a Marine? 🤦🏽‍♀️
@ai6yr Ooo, the Louis Rossmann vid on this is gonna be golden. 🤣
