The EFF is, thankfully, taking umbrage at Australia’s #AgeVerification legislation which came into force yesterday, and rightly so. However, with statements such as:
“If legislators want to meaningfully improve online safety, they should pass a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law instead of building new systems of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion.“

It’s missing the mark, not really providing a solution to the targeted problem, and may just cloud the issue (confusing parents/guardians mainly) while giving our polies a free pass. That’s just my opinion of course. But if you really wanted to tackle on-line bullying and curtail the hate, the racism, the disinformation, misinformation, and general toxicity that is prevalent on #TechBros platforms, you’d need to do more than just reform and strengthen #PrivacyLaws. Digital media is just like radio/TV/paper media with more functionality and reach which are #regulated worldwide (more or less depending on country of publication/broadcast). Hence, to hit the mark, this new govt legislation ought to have been a set of #Regulations imposed on digital media (of every kind) with penalties for failure to comply to have any meaningful benefits to society and its younger people.
Of course, more regulations is not what the EFF stands for, so no surprises there. Saying that, I do believe that the EFF does important work and is to be commended for that.
There are alternatives to BigTech platforms which are #safer more #inclusive already deployed on the #internet. And if our govt was truly looking after the health of our kids, then govt departments who have the #DutyOfCare to keep our kids safe could #Fund #instances of #Mastodon on the #Fediverse for #kids run by kids with oversight by health professionals as #Moderators — a glaringly obvious solution that no one is talking about (outside the fediverse that is).
