Today in Labor History March 30, 1930: Three thousand workers, mostly African-American, began construction on the Hawks Nest Tunnel in West Virginia. The employer cut costs by failing to provide safety equipment. Additionally, bosses forced the men to work 10-15-hour days, often at gunpoint, without breaks and without masks to protect themselves from the silicon dust. Consequently, hundreds of workers died of silicosis. Possibly over 1,000 people, one-third of the entire workforce, died from silicosis, in one of America’s worst cases of mass workplace mortality.

Today in Labor History March 10, 1896: Nancy Clara Cunard was born in London into the Cunard shipping dynasty. She was a surrealist writer, model, anarchist and an anti-fascist and anti-racist activist. Her family disinherited her because of her relationship with Henry Crowder, a Black jazz pianist from the U.S. She helped refugees from the Spanish civil war, wrote extensively about fascist Italy's invasion of Ethiopia, and worked as a translator for the French resistance during World War II. She was also active in the anti-racist movement in the U.S.

The war in Iran is costing U.S. taxpayers, which 73% of whom do not support, in excess of $1 billion per day.

And with its $90 billion budget, ICE is now costing taxpayers (many of whom are undocumented immigrants) nearly $250 million per day to murder, torture, rape, deport, gas, and terrorize immigrants and citizens alike.

But, no, we cannot afford to provide healthcare, housing, daycare, family leave, decent schools, public health.
