America has The Onion, Canada has The Beaverton. This is a helpful travel piece: "Canadians travelling to the US advised to not fucking do that".

β€œCanadians are welcome in California. It’s perfectly safe to visit,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. β€œJust so long as you take a few basic travel precautions, like travelling on a valid passport, teleporting over the border, moving undetected in the shadows in the dead of night, getting the telephone number of an immigration attorney tattooed to your upper thigh, saying a heartfelt goodbye to your pets and the people who love you, and appointing someone to water your plants just in case you disappear into a labyrinthian nightmare of an extrajudicial immigration enforcement system that no longer answers to judge nor common mercy.”

Canadians travelling to the US advised to not fucking do that

OTTAWA - Canadians thinking of planning a trip to the United States are being advised by the Government of Canada to perhaps consider going anywhere else on the entire fucking planet for their summer vacations.

It's 1991, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

It's 2003, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

It's 2025, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

Oh boy…
"I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security," says UN Secretary General AntΓ³nio Guterres. "There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world."

'Meredith,' some guys ask, 'why won't you shove AI into Signal?'

Because we love privacy, and we love you, and this shit is predictable and unacceptable. Use Signal ❀️

Don’s right. Trumpism not just permits, but demands, overt hostility to a wide array of American values, institutions, culture, and people. Trumpism hates much more of America than it loves.

ETA: GOOD NEWS!

https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/114709820512537821

In reading an important discussion of the IP assignment in the new Mastodon.social ToS:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/35086

I was GOBSMACKED to discover the new ToS has a "binding arbitration waiver," which takes away your right to sue, no matter how badly the service abuses you.

These are profoundly unethical, terrible clauses. They should never, ever appear in "adhesion contracts" (that is, contracts that you merely click through, rather than negotiating.)

New Terms of Service IP clause cannot be terminated or revoked, not even by deleting content Β· Issue #35086 Β· mastodon/mastodon

Summary Since it first opened, mastodon.social has operated without any sort of explicit IP grant from the users to the service, which is unusual for a social networking service. Today Mastodon ann...

@Legit_Spaghetti
What are the chances Trump Jr will embroil the US in the Middle East in 2047
@RnDanger @Legit_Spaghetti 2057, the cadence is adding 10 years to the previous gap.
#Fact #Science
@Niall @Legit_Spaghetti i have a vote for "not great" πŸ˜…
@RnDanger @Legit_Spaghetti
And drag other countries into the invasion as well

@RnDanger @Legit_Spaghetti Yeah, I'll literally eat my own shoe and videotape it for you if the man lives to be 101, let alone is still President

EDIT: lmao, I missed the "jr" part. If we have Donnie Jr for that long and humanity doesn't resemble Fallout games by some miracle, maybe.

@Legit_Spaghetti It's 1983, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit civil war in Lebanon, getting our embassy blown up.

@Legit_Spaghetti

unprecedented! nobody could have predicted that or have any reaction other than pure shook. if you are not shocked that means you are a terrorist. deport him guys

@Legit_Spaghetti I think I see a pattern here.

@Legit_Spaghetti I can't speak much to 1991...I was alive but a kid, and i haven't studied the history too much. but for the later two....

If Gore had won, (or righyfully been declared the winner SMH) would he have avoided war? I have my doubts.

Similar for Kamala, I very much wish Trump had lost, but I have suspisions Kamala could have been drawn into this war on behalf of genocidal Israel in much the same way

@aeischeid Personally, I don't think 9/11 would have happened under Gore.

In the late '90s, the FBI had a hard-on for going after eco terrorists like the ELF (though that label is debatable). In 2000, there was an arson spree in Phoenix, and they reassigned a few key FBI people to crack that case. One of the agents assigned to the arson case had been working on a report about Al'Qaeda cells learning to fly planes.

No one paid attention to that report until it was too late.

@Legit_Spaghetti @aeischeid It still would’ve happened. bin Laden put that plan into action in the early 1990s. What might not have happened was spending 20 years fighting two wars largely for no legitimate reason. We probably would’ve chosen one nation to invade for 20 years instead of two.

@Legit_Spaghetti sure, maybe so, who can really say, betterfly effect and all, but even if 9/11 hadn't happened... I remember pretty clearly how much Gore talked about all the intervening he hoped to do in the middle east during their debates.

Bush came off to me as the anti-war candidate of the two of them, and I don't know maybe that was me being yound and credulous, but Gore sure didn't seem like somebody who would avoid war

@aeischeid @Legit_Spaghetti Harris would’ve happily help Israel murder children. At least she’d be aware that she was a bad guy (and absolutely done it anyways). Trump will go to his grave convinced he’s a hero.
@aeischeid @Legit_Spaghetti the invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, remember? That was just a Bush family extra curricular activity, that wasted trillions of dollars and millions of lives.
If Gore had been president there not would have been an Iraq 2.

@Legit_Spaghetti

Oh, that’s so not my kind of nostalgia. I just wanted to repair my Walkman.

@Legit_Spaghetti fun fact neocons are really similar to neoliberals except neoliberals prefer debt traps before allying with fascists to extract value from the 3rd world. nice and tall horse u got though.

@Legit_Spaghetti a reminder again that Ozymandias engineered his exile...

@Legit_Spaghetti

#Trump has been sagging in the polls. He needed a war to boost his favoribility and seem more "presidential"

Works every time.

@sleepy62 @Legit_Spaghetti

I think public support for this war will be comparable to public sympathy for the dead CEO a few months ago.

Statements by political leaders and the corporate media do not reflect the sentiments of the public.

@Legit_Spaghetti

Detecting a pattern here… 😐

@Legit_Spaghetti Watch a republican president embroil us in a bullshit war in the Middle East in 2067
@Legit_Spaghetti Peace president. Family friendly politics. Yep… Break young men even more. war is peace.
@Legit_Spaghetti it's years.... (fill the blank) and some American politicians started a war.
@Legit_Spaghetti
so next time you'll probably vote for a Republican candidate again.

@Legit_Spaghetti

1991 there was a (disputable) United Nations Security Council Resolution allowing US to do so

2003 it was fake news, a pressure to "do something" because of 9/11 and at the US tried to get official support from other countries

2025 is different.

@nichtich

2003 involved NATO as the US involved Article 5 - that went so well... still is as far as I know. The UK to our shame got involved. Bliar The War Criminal amongst other issues.

Ongoing - the UK has participated in Israel's War Crimes already - Starmer The War Criminal.
Good for the rest of NATO not getting involved.
Now pursue the Genocide Convention.

@Legit_Spaghetti
@Legit_Spaghetti the grand american chessboard is what unites them all

@Legit_Spaghetti Llavors ja queda clar qui son els mΓ©s feixistes no? (Writed in catalan)
@Legit_Spaghetti Europe, you have the chance to do the funniest thing and really piss off the orange turd β€” give Harris a Nobel Peace Prize
@Legit_Spaghetti The pic is Earth in 2035 what remains of it ?
@Legit_Spaghetti ..talk about doom scrolling
@Legit_Spaghetti
... and now you're only talking about the wars which are on the frontpage of the news. I'm afraid the US is already involved in multiple wars, but nobody knows about it.

@Legit_Spaghetti

There were Democratic members of Congress behind all of those wars.

@Legit_Spaghetti At least the Bushes tried to make a case to the American people and the international community about the necessity for their wars. Whether we believed them or not, they explained why we should go to war. Trump just expects us to go along with whatever he wants to do.

@Legit_Spaghetti @Binder

Republicans know that:

1) American presidents who are embroiled in a war tend to be re-elected.
2) Trump wants a third term.
3) The only thing stopping many of them being strung like Mussolini and his wife is Trump is still in power. The only question there is which faction will get to them first.

@Legit_Spaghetti at least the time between seems to be doubling every time

@tomasekeli @Legit_Spaghetti

Time between? Don't count conflict start dates. Consider conclusion dates

@Legit_Spaghetti to be fair, ALL US presidents have bombed the shit out of the middle east for some reason or another..... oh... wait... probably oil. It's oil isn't it.
But also, Fuck Trump.
@Legit_Spaghetti 100% agree. If history teaches us anything, when US international aggression is displayed, those on the receiving end of it will use all the tools at their disposal to fight back. It isn't stopping the Iranians from firing more missiles at Israel, so I guess that didn't work and all it did was to embolden them to state that now they are DEFINITELY pursuing a nuke.
@mylesw @Legit_Spaghetti I read a book in college I think called, "The End of Peace," but I've not been able to find it by that name. He discussed all "worldwide" (western) wars, the peace agreements made, and what destroyed them. He pointed finger at the development of a hegemony. The hegemony starts pushing everyone else around and the world blows up, everyone dies, and then everyone agrees to never let that happen again...but there's always some loophole that lets it happen again.
@mylesw @Legit_Spaghetti The author suggested one of USA or USSR would become that hegemony and the UN Sec council would make it useless.
@crazyeddie @Legit_Spaghetti This seems so close and all too familiar.
@Legit_Spaghetti
Old Taco will end up dealing with constant terrorist attacks on US soil from Iran (and those sympathetic) to them. The second one of those kicks off on US soil, he'll lock down the USA hard. Remember "Build a wall"? Well walls have two sides - they keep out those you don't want in, but they jail in those that want the freedom of travel to get out. So we got that to look forward to.
@Legit_Spaghetti There might be a hidden pattern...

@Legit_Spaghetti

Each one crazier then the last. This might be the last in this particular series though.
