✍️ New post: The Shape of Friction

I wrote a short blog post reply to @davatron5000’s recent post (👏) about generative AI, friction, and people.

and let me say this straight up:

Silicon Valley techbros have more class solidarity among them than their workers.

it is no coincidence that they unleashed the grift of #AI as unionization was gaining momentum among workers in the largest companies; especially Amazon, Apple and Google.

the main purpose of #AIslop is to kill any unionization efforts by tech workers.

now, more than ever, tech workers need to organize into guilds that’ll represent them beyond employment.

#TheOnion going hard at #SamAltman.
It's hard to pick, but I think this is my favorite line:
"Why did you decide to devote your life to AI?
I just saw so much suffering in the world that needed to be automated."

The Onion’s Exclusive Interview With Sam Altman

While leading OpenAI, Sam Altman has weathered leaked internal memos, an attempt to oust him as CEO, and widespread skepticism about artificial intelligence’s role in society. The Onion sat down with the entrepreneur to hear his vision for the technology’s future. The Onion: Good morning, Sam. How are you doing today?Altman: Certainly! Here are some […]

So what are the top murdertech companies at the moment? (The ones enabling mass murder of civilians through AI, surveillance,
etc.)

• Palantir
• Google
• Microsoft
• OpenAI
• Anthropic
• IBM
• …

… did I forget any? Feel free to reply and add to the list.

@talon Also this "tool" will go away the next hype cycle comes around. Obviously, machine learning and the general tech will not go away. Machine learning will continue to advance but I do think after the bubble bursts we will see a lot more local and even specialized local LLMs. It is not here to stay, because investors won't allow it to stay. The above posts buys into the hype, unfortunately, otherwise I would have boosted it. I do use an LLM because I just can't get away from it, honestly, like in the Be My Eyes app and similar, but 2 truths can be in one's head at the same time. To the original poster, it is a complete accident an LLM just happens to make things more accessible, which is unfortunately why Enshittification will hit the most marginalized users the hardest when the tech starts to rot, which is already happening.
SILICON VALLEY: I'm buzzing with a new idea
EVERYONE: New idea or just crimes again?
SILICON VALLEY: ... Crimes again
EVERYONE: well at least this time it wasn't reinventing buses
Technology is not inevitable. We've decided not to have asbestos in our walls, lead in our pipes, or carginogenic chemicals in our food. (If you're going to argue that it's not everywhere, where would you rather live?) We could just not do LLMs. It's allowed.

It's International Women's Day, so when you see people zooming by on electric scooters, I remember Lady Norman and her autoped. She was a suffragist who insisted on being mobile without manly "protection" :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priscilla_Norman

(UPDATE: Yes, many men in the replies. The autoped used a combustion engine, I know. My post is however NOT about the autoped, it's about the woman standing on it. I know, that's really hard for some of you to deal with. :)
