It's International Women's Day, so when you see people zooming by on electric scooters, I remember Lady Norman and her autoped. She was a suffragist who insisted on being mobile without manly "protection" :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priscilla_Norman

(UPDATE: Yes, many men in the replies. The autoped used a combustion engine, I know. My post is however NOT about the autoped, it's about the woman standing on it. I know, that's really hard for some of you to deal with. :)

@jwildeboer Just another proof that modern technology is just a recycling of old technology...
@ZySoua @jwildeboer And thus modern misogyny is just a recycling of old misogyny...
@jwildeboer What a wonderful little machine! Hopefully it’s still about.
@jwildeboer there are endless great contributions women have made to the world but you chose the most annoying invention 😞 can't walk in peace in a city since those arrived
@jwildeboer I wonder how many replies from "Actually" guys this toot will accumulate before the day is over...
@ridetheory The lengths some guys go to just to avoid discussing or, gasp, supporting women's rights on women's day will never cease to amaze me :)

@jwildeboer I hate to see it on the Fediverse.

Guys, if you're out there composing an "actually" toot right now, stop and ask yourself "Does this contribute to the celebration of Women's Day?" If not, don't post it.

@ridetheory @jwildeboer doesn’t seem like these instructions should be so hard to follow AND YET
@minmi It always serves as a way to find new entries for my blocklist ;) @ridetheory
@jwildeboer @minmi @ridetheory bookmarking this to go over it in a few days and enhance my own !!
@ridetheory @jwildeboer
True, they hijacked the conversation and pulled it completely off-point...

@ridetheory @jwildeboer

then, guys, having learned how to not post some offensive "actually" toot, practice it everyday.
here and irl.

(and that's a minimum requirement. it's crazy and cringe that they're not capable of doing that.)

@jwildeboer

Scooters don’t seem to have changed all too much

@jwildeboer That looks cool!!!
@Ponygirl @jwildeboer
Batmobile-looking scooter!

@jwildeboer

Holy Moses, I had never known about this invention, nor her use of it

Thank you so much for pointing it out!

@jwildeboer That can't be real...

Is it real? 🤔

@AugrahsButler Just because something's cool doesn't mean it's not real.

One of the best ways of confirming whether something is real or not is by checking the citations (ie where did the information come from). If you follow the Wikipedia link from this post you'll see the same image, and if you follow the Autoped link from that image caption you can read more about the Autoped. Each of those pages also has citations for all their sources. Also the image was uploaded to Wikipedia in 2019, before AI enshittified images. So there seems to be plenty of indication that this is in fact real.

@jwildeboer

@zeborah @jwildeboer

Ok, after that long explanation, now I know it's fake. Thanks!

@[email protected] It's real. You are a troll. Welcome to my blocklist.
@jwildeboer My brain is tickled by the fact that this is front wheel drive.
@jwildeboer
feine Erinnerung von vor just 100 Jahren. Es ist DIE Geschichtsstunde: 3 Jahre danach, 1919 übernahm die Produktion die Fa. Krupp, ab 1922 verschwand dieser Nichtstinker..
I love how similar it is to modern electric scooters
@jwildeboer what the goth solorpunk feminist heck that's awesome

@jwildeboer

One of the earliest patents for a "chain sawing machine" comprising a chain of links carrying saw teeth was granted to Frederick L. Magaw of Flatlands, New York in 1883, apparently for the purpose of producing boards by stretching the chain between grooved drums.

@jwildeboer
I very much like yout message. Why on earth does it return 12 times in my timeline after you edited it?
@apenkop I honestly don't know and apologise. My editing is done, so it should be quiet now :(
@jwildeboer
Women who braved social repercussions to break out of the limited role we could have in society paved the way for the rest of us. My gratitude is bone deep.
@jwildeboer Wow I wasn't expecting this toot to fatten my blocklist but here we are.
@jwildeboer in a nasal voice 'actually, I believe you will find..."
@capnthommo Well, actually I researched this picture and the life of Lady Norman extensively a few years ago, so I am more than happy to answer questions :)
@jwildeboer
Need protection FROM men, not by them
