I’m halfway through my first proper #gardening chore of 2023: clearing now-dormant plants off three of our lit shelves, to make room for starting the first round of pepper seeds in a few days.

This is the first winter outdoors for Big Tuna, our Opuntia humifusa (Eastern Prickly Pear). Years ago, just as we became obsessed with cactuses, we were delighted to notice a large opuntia decked with snow in a local yard. They were tickled we liked it and gave us some pads to propagate.

This species is actually native to the eastern US, and ranges surprisingly far north. I’ve seen photos of it midwinter in a botanical garden in Canada, even. This photo is from this morning, at 0 degrees F. 🤞

I mean.
I noticed this #Tillandsia ionantha in bloom, this morning.
After a couple dismal, overly-thrifty holiday seasons without a tree, we decided we would always have a tree regardless of budget, even if it means more debt. I think it’s one of the wiser unwise things we do. #Christmas #Holidays #ChristmasTree
After five years, my Ferocactus latispinus sub. spiralis produced three lovely flowers! I hope it intends to show off every year, now.
