Abir Khalil | Pet Artist 🇨🇦Presenting my latest commissioned memorial portrait drawing of a true princess, Skyla.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
The most challenging aspect of this project was working on such a large scale—the largest size I typically undertake—and using low-resolution reference images. Moreover, my clients provided photos of Skyla both as a young dog and in her senior years, when they felt closest to her. Since she had mostly greyed, it was essential to capture her vibrancy and at the same time portray her graceful ageing. To honour their vision, I studied the references carefully and captured Skyla at an “in-between” stage, balancing her youthful spirit with the elegance of her senior years.

ABOUT THE PET:
Skyla, also known as Komar’s Stop N Stare, was born on August 11, 2009, and began her journey as a show dog shortly after arriving from Texas. Although small for an Afghan Hound, she quickly became known for her fierce and vibrant personality. Skyla earned her Canadian Championship by age two and bonded deeply with her owner during her long grooming hours until her retirement.
Over the years, Skyla gracefully aged from a striking black-masked beauty to a dignified gray-masked elder. She found joy in raising orphaned kittens, going on car rides, eating Pizza (her favourite word), and reminding other dogs on the street who was boss. In her final years, she faced arthritis, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, but her last days were filled with treats, sunshine, and love. On June 5th at 6:52 pm, Skyla peacefully passed in her favourite spot on the couch. She leaves cherished memories and a lasting impact on those who loved her.
