Attended an excellent event earlier today - "Move Slowly and Build Bridges: #Mastodon, the #Fediverse, and the Struggle for Democratic Social Media (in #Canada)".

Really enjoyed the book talk by @rwg and the panel discussion afterwards, including (among others) @chad and @Django.

Unrelated to that, but actually very related:
Tonight, I am planning on finishing up a post on the vicious cycle of rage, algorithms, engagement, and tracking that the "legacy algorithmic media" keep us trapped in. Down the line, I am hoping to follow that up with a post on how the #fediverse (and other networks/platforms not owned by billionaires and enshittifying constantly) can help lift us out of that cycle.

One of them features an entirely #noAI, artisanal, handcrafted flowchart, at which point everyone will get to see that I am not a professional flowchart maker. So stay tuned for that?

I'm spending this fine afternoon writing. I was planning on drafting a preamble to an "Alternatives" series I'm idly planning for the future.

The piece started out as "why should we even look for #alternatives to billionaire-owned 'social media' in the first place" -

... and then I realized what I was *actually* writing was a piece on the link, and the self-reinforcing loop, involving:

- 🧠 the #psychology of content sharing - high arousal, intense emotions;
- πŸ’© the #enshittification of once-social media into algorithmic content pushing machines, their goal no longer being the facilitation of communication between humans, but to keep eyeballs on the platform for as long as possible;
- πŸ”„οΈ and how each of these separately feed off each other, and create an ever-reinforcing and self-sustaining loop.

Finding lots of good research out there, so, I guess, stay tuned? πŸ€“

Hi! Hello!

This is izzy with Technically Good, a blog/website/newsletter project that:

πŸ”’ helps people understand user privacy, especially on large, enshittified platforms;
🐘 suggests more privacy friendly, and/or decentralized, alternatives to those large, enshittified platforms; and
πŸ€– advocates for ethical AI regulation and digital sovereignty.

In a nutshell, it defends and helps rebuild a web that serves users (not advertisers), and advocates for using our tech for good.
