# Uh, Oh! We've Ratcheted up to a threat now on Adblock and UblockOrigin...
Soft landings usually mean it doesn't hurt very much at first, then perhaps the event becomes more frequent and escalates to something that looks like the attached screenie...
When this happens, you may wish to avail yourself of some of the alternatives below.
Once you get here you're faced with trying options or even becoming disenfranchised. Switching to another browser is a prudent test, some have suggested pasting links into Incognito Mode tabs or logging out, while others have claimed that stock Brave Browser seems to humming along for them; and third party utils from among the list that follows:
### Web based:
- [Invidious](invidious.io/)
- [Piped](github.com/TeamPiped/Piped#rea…)
### Android (both are available at F-Droid):
- [LibreTube](libretube.dev/)
- [NewPipe](newpipe.net/#download)
### Desktop:
- [FreeTube](github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTub…) ( Linux | UNIX | Windows):
### Browser extension (a native, local, cross-platform solution):
- [AdNauseam](adnauseam.io/)
This last option is a simple browser extension that is apparently quite popular with folks, levying its own ethical pressure upon those who would force-feed you with data mined ad generation. The README file has some great information on the methodology incorporated.
On #Android, I haven't been presented with any of these foreboding pop ups warning me about blockers. I typically use #Brave or #Vivaldi Browser, they're stock, but I use the YouTube app more than I do any one of my browsers on my phones.
I also run the #DuckDuckGo **"App Tracking Protection service"**. This is ***NOT*** #FOSS, so your choices are either installing from the #Aurora or Google Playstore, yet there's no requirement to use the #DDG browser to enable this protection - it's not for your browsers though (even DDG), it is designed to work with pretty much everything on your Android ***EXCEPT*** browsers; *i.e., almost all of your installed apps, seamlessly*, and since most folks stream YouTube videos through the Google YouTube Android app, I surmise that it targets and obliterates ads in the app (I haven't confirmed the veracity of that, it's merely supposition, but it blocks zillions of attempts by installed apps to phone home).
I'm Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, personal observations, and concerns; other toolsets or applications that meet your needs, and why you may have chosen those particular types of tools.
*I hope that helps!*

I get questions from time to time asking about the sailboat ⛵ emoji I terminate most of my posts with in social media and beyond. Got one yesterday, and figured it's as good a time as any to take my response, copypasta it, and push it to the Fediverse where I can pin it and just link to in the future when I need it.
So without further adieu here's pretty much the gist of any response I make when that question arises...
Okay tl;dr... My daughter was born in 1996. That effectively ended my life at sea, since I raised her from birth, alone and on my own until she left the nest to head off to university after graduating high school
Prior to that I had literally spent half my life onboard seagoing vessels, either working as a diving instructor, researcher, or liveaboard on one of my many progessively larger sailboats each time I purcahsed a new home for myself. At the time it was a 102' steel brigantine called "God of Thunder - an actual square rigged tallship, if you will.
The sailboat emoticon is coincidental to my long standing handle, and IMO, *cute*. It's also, perhaps more importantly, a very easy visual when scanning through posts for someone to say, "Here's one from that guy", lolz.
It does follow a long standing tradition of people customizing their signatures going back to Usenet, majordomo listservs, etc., but takes up a single line instead of the 'other types' of gawdy signatures spanning several lines with ASCII art that was once so popular in mail and webforums, Telnet/SSH MOTD's; not to mention the irritable nature of such signatures when followed by PGP signings.
Not being plain text, it also does two other things - enables me to quickly find my own posts in a sea of others (no pun intended), and raises the eye level conveniently so that the meat of the body of any message is separated from any messages/posts that follow.
I also use it as a *reaction*, generally to mean that I like or agree with someone else's comments in forums and chat systems like this and Matrix.
I suppose I could also characterize the existence of a sailboat emoticon as being standard in pretty much any online social construct as fortuitous, since I have always identified so closely with the connotations I derive from seeing it, and a reminder that someday, eventually, I'll return to that kind of life.
In the meantime, since I've returned here to my homeland in SoCal after the better part of a decade off-grid in the mountain wilderness, I'm within walking distance of prime spearfishing kelp beds at the bottom of the cliff near my house.
<insert sailboat emoji here>

I hope that helps!

## Tapir updates... Moving right along!
Tapir is coming along nicely, with continued active development and commits in just the past few days.
I never get this right, #SmallWeb, #SmolWeb, or... Let's just say it's one of the latest in single user, exceedingly simple to deploy #Fediverse servers that you can carry around in your bookbag on your laptop, or conveniently on your desktop workstations.
It's written in Deno, so, think Typescript/JavaScript/Node in a safe by default implementation.
I'm personally looking forward to Adam hopefully showcasing his work and just how simple it is to get up and running during the upcoming #ActivityConf expected to occur at the end of October.
He's got great aspirations for it and here's a bit of what the roadmap has at this time:
* broad fediverse compatibility
* install directly from a URL with one Deno command
run with limited permissions (just --allow-net and a single folder)
* sqlite and postgres backends
* multiple personas (users) with one login and one home timeline (the main account can leverage OAuth)
* personas can have different timeline styles (make it look like Pixelfed)
* build your own federated timeline from multiple servers
* post scheduling
* sophisticated filter rules and a customizable home timeline algorithm
* follow RSS feeds, Nitter feeds, maybe Nostr feeds
* personal full-text search
* a plugin system
Much like what most Fediverse platforms enjoy, like #Friendica, #Mitra, and Takahē, Tapir accounts can be connected to by following, @-mentioning, replying to, and boosting posts or Quote Posting them. There's also a link for feeds.
You too can follow along with the project by following now or asking questions of the developer at @tapir - even in this early stage of development, #Tapir supports most all of the features you've come to take for granted from a solid platform from which to engage in social communications with others in the Fediverse and beyond in much the same way as you already do from your #Pleroma, #Soapbox, and #Calckey accounts - without the hassles or uncertainty of having to depend upon someone else's infrastructure and all the baggage that comes with that.
I'm not aware of a Matrix room or IRC support channel at this moment, but all in good time.
Later I'll do a deeper drill down and publish an article, perhaps even be afforded the opportunity for an interview, and I'll be covering others in depth too, namely, #MicroblogPub and #Bovine - two other very fine and capable SmallWeb, er... SmolWeb, ummm... forget it, **single-user Fediverse servers**. 🤙
I regularly showcase existing and emerging #DeSoc development in #Fediverse-city:matrix.org and circle back around every so often with updates concerning these free and privacy respecting decentralized technologies, everyone is welcome and the best insight into these software projects trends to emanate from others who offer their input and experiences. Maybe we'll see you there too...
And remember, you can haz #Cheezburgerz! 🍔
