Dear #photography fediverse.

I make "new year demos" (as in "demoscene")annually (some here https://solhsa.com/breakdown.html) and I'm thinking of making a jigsaw puzzle themed one this year.

The demos are released at the beginning of the year, so I'm a bit early this year.

Do you have some nice photos you would like to let me use? You'll be credited, naturally, but this is a pro bono thingy.

Razor 1911 made a PC demo for Revision 2026 that's a whirlwind retrospective of the group, touching on a lot of warez/art/demoscene tech, tools, and history since they started in 1985. It won the PC Demo category and clearly earned it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AnbYNudAyM

for whoever needs to hear this: you're not alone. i'm not vibecoding any of the software i write. i'm writing it by hand, but i've leveled up my emacs with eglot/lsp. i'm modernizing my stacks and use languages with excellent compilers. i think about how to do more with less. i'm trying to combine the best human-written libraries and modules and assemble them with minimal boilerplate. i enjoy reading your manuals and references. i believe in robust, secure, human-written software.

25 years ago today, Bad_CRC posted the primordial meme video "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" on Newgrounds.

In honor of this important anniversary, I downloaded the original Flash SWF file from Internet Archive, played it using Ruffle in a full-screen window, and replaced the audio with the original MP3 of "Invasion of the Gabber Robots" by The Laziest Men on Mars. So this is probably the highest fidelity encoding possible, without going back to the original forum GIFs.

inspired by CLAUDE.md, I’ve started putting markdown files named after coworkers into work code repos so I can remind them to stop doing shit to the codebase that annoys me

for some reason they’re all mad at me now, which means ill be adding commands to JEREMY.md for an attitude adjustment

My latest addition to the Moomin shelf in the Tove Trove library is the second book in the original series, published in 1946. This years its 80th anniversary is being celebrated by Moominites around the world. #BookReview #Books #Moomins #Finland #ToveTrove #ToveJansson #SnorkMaiden #Moomintroll

‪It is rather beautiful here in Oulu 🇫🇮, right now. Absolutely no filters needed at all 🤌
-20°C, wind chill -28°C.

This is one of our main cycling and walking routes (#8) and here we have a 5 km stretch with ZERO at-grade crossings with motor traffic. I repeat, it's physically impossible to meet any motor traffic here. So it is very peaceful, safe and comfortable to ride and walk completely uninterrupted. Just bliss.

Somen haitat koskevat kaikkia ikään katsomatta

Sosiaalinen media tai nettiyhteisöt eivät ole itsessään ongelma, vaan sosiaalisen median alustat, joissa on suosittelualgoritmi ja heikko moderointi.

This one is really well known (in the demoscene anyway), but has aged shockingly well:

This was "high-res" (640x480) at the time. Most DOS demos were still habitually 320x200 or 320x240.

The textured 3D scenes have aged the most, but even 25 years later I have no idea what some of these effects actually do or how they manage to look so good.

Given my physics teacher (35 years ago) said repeatedly that girls couldn't do physics, I feel like this is a slight improvement 🙄

freyablekman - I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.

So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.

Don’t believe the gatekeepers! #womeninSTEM
