So I've noticed new behavior on Masto the last few days that I don't think I'd seen before. It looks like some posts get automatically visually collapsed, even if there's no CW.

As best as I can tell, this applies to posts that either have a lot of hashtags or @-mention other users. I can't exactly nail it down, but I assume it's some kind of anti-spam behavior.

This is definitely behavior that would be harmful to creators and artists on this platform, ESPECIALLY if it is based on hashtags, which we've been repeating over and over to creators how important it is to use.

Apologies for another Mastodon meta-post, but you might have heard that you can "follow #hashtags" on here. It took me a little while to understand what that actually meant, so I wanted to share.

If you go to the page for a specific #hashtag you should be able to find a control to start following it.

After that, your home feed will show posts not only from the specific people you're following, but also the hashtags.

This provides an excellent means of discovery across the #fediverse!

One thing that's very different between how I used to interact with Twitter and how I've learned to interact here is that exploration of users and hashtags is much more important here - but it's also really fun!

And I tend to share the stuff that I find really interesting via boosting a lot more than I ever RTed content.
