Academic-adjacent, twin toddlers, medically high risk neurodivergent family #stillCOVIDing #NEISvoid #environmentaljustice #AuDHD

Header: A photo of fall leaves, pinecones, acorns, twigs, bright red berries, and little winged seeds arranged on a dark purple surface. It's basically an artful arrangement of the things my toddlers stuff in their pockets.

I had the idea for @blackjoy after thinking about how #racism becomes ingrained through seeing negative images of black people in mass media. Out of that came a bot that toots pictures of #BlackJoy.

For a long time I've wanted to do the same for #indigenous people, but life has gotten in the way. I still want to do so.

In the meantime, I want to recommend @indigneousphoto - tooting archival photos of indigenous people as they are, or were. Let the pictures and stories speak for themselves.

I've been asked if there's a place folks can contribute to the zeroes.ca operating costs:

If -- and only if -- you have extra to spare.

Peeps coming over to #Mastodon for the first time:
-Servers are super overloaded now w/ massive new accts being made. - Timeline is super slow. It’s not usually like that.
- There’s no single billion $ co paying for equipment.
- So tip yr server admins $10, ok?
- Most admins are unpaid, ‘cept for donations.

I spoke to TIME magazine about the vital role that Twitter plays in crisis- and disaster-related communication — serving as a hub for firsthand witness/survivor accounts, news gathering, emergency alerts & guidance, real-time updates on closures & safe passageways, direct contact with emergency services, etc — and how catastrophic it would be to lose this, especially since we have nothing to take its place yet.

Twitter Was Once Vital In a Crisis. The UVA Shooting Shows It Won’t Be Easy to Replace

If Twitter as we know it is lost, experts say a critical communication tool for responding to crisis situations will be lost.

Saturn, when viewed in the near-infrared methane absorption band, appears blue. You're able to peer through the upper hazes into the clouds below and the bands and belts start to take shape. It's still false color, but almost looks like a whole new planet.

Delighted to see a new instance devoted to #unions, union members, and allies. This seems like a potentially fruitful way to organize for progressive causes on Mastodon and in the fediverse generally. Check out https://union.place/public/local cc @tim

This uplifts me during a rough week: #Edmonton #PublicLibrary is offering library users CO2 monitors to check out. Everyone can start taking measurements about indoor air quality -- and if it's not great, they can fix it or add air filters or wear better masks.
The library only announced it today and there are already 23 holds for 21 devices. People WANT to measure and improve #IndoorAirQuality, they just need tools + info!

My father loved
to repeat the advice
a kind man had given,
namely: that one
should look
for the helpers.

And though
my father never told me
how to find or recognize
such people
sometimes when I look
I still see someone
wearing a mask
and for a moment I think:
there is a helper.

For those who don't yet know there is a plug in for Chrome called UnPaywall that lets you find the #OpenAccess versions of #Academic #Research when they exist.
Honestly it is totally worth it even if you are with an institution b/c it is faster than logging into a library etc.
