A new study found that 10 species of commonly consumed fish from #SFBay frequently contain high levels of #ForeverChemicals (or #PFAS) which can take hundreds to thousands of years to break down and accumulate in the people and animals that eat them.

The South Bay is especially polluted.

Toxic Catch: Bay Area Communities at Risk from PFAS in Local Fish | KQED

Dangerous forever chemicals, known as PFAS, have been found in nearly every fish sample from the San Francisco Bay.

Attention, Richmonders! The United Heckathorn Superfund site is a major source of pollutants contaminating #SFBay & the Richmond shoreline. The site was supposed to be cleaned up in the 90s, but that effort failed.

The EPA is working on a plan to get the site cleaned up and is holding a series of meetings to raise awareness and hear community concerns.

The next meeting will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, 5/21 from 6:30-8:00pm. The discussion will focus on why the first cleanup was ineffective.

As our science director @jarosenfield points out, expanding Shasta Dam would capture water flows that are currently the only lifeline endangered #salmon have https://calmatters.org/environment/water/2025/05/shasta-dam-california-water-farmers-trump/ #cawater #californiawater #EndangeredSpecies #fish #fishing #shastadam
This California dam could be enlarged under Trump

The Shasta Dam project would deliver more water to Central Valley farmers but a tribe could lose sacred sites and endangered salmon could lose habitat.

Call Senators Schiff & Padilla to Reject Attack on Endangered Species Act - San Francisco Baykeeper

After a 17-year-long battle, Baykeeper’s legal team finally won a court order that compelled the federal government to protect the Bay's Longfin Smelt by listing it as an endangered species. But last week, the House of Representatives, voted to undo the listing. Now, the fate of this important species rests with the Senate. The best

Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, SF Bay is counting on you! https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2025-05-01/california-longfin-smelt-endangered-species-repeal

U.S. House votes to take California fish off endangered species list

House Republicans vote to repeal a decision that placed a California fish, longfin smelt, on the endangered species list. Democrats and environmentalists condemned the action.

Thank you to Reps Jared Huffman, Josh Harder, and John Garamendi for standing firm, and to Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick for demonstrating that protecting America's waters is not a partisan issue.

Congress is expected to vote on a Republican resolution to reverse endangered species protections for the Bay's Longfin Smelt--and it could set a dangerous precedent.

“Generally we’re seeing an all-out assault on the #EndangeredSpeciesAct and protections like it,” said Cameron Walkup at @Earthjustice which opposes the resolution along with Baykeeper and several other of our partners. Walkup called the Congressional Review Act “an undemocratic, scorched-earth policy (that) makes it so a bare majority in Congress can overturn any law.” https://www.sfchronicle.com/climate/article/longfin-smelt-endangered-sf-bay-20301394.php
