A beautiful and poignant sculpture on one side of the base of an otherwise plain obelisk in the Necropolis in Glasgow. The only words on this memorial are 'Beloved Mother', and the name G. Mossman, one of the city's finest sculptors. Some determined digging by the historian Diane Burns, means we can now put a name to this particular mother: Agnes Strang.

I was in a part of Meeker today where these coral mushrooms (I should really check for a proper identification) have sprouted in massive quantity.
This one was backed by a lovely moss field so it gets the post, though there were a lot of pretties. We have basically been in a cloud here for a week, so the fungus is just thrilled.
And right next to the fungus, a mysterious face embedded in the tree roots!

When sperm whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of five or six whales, possibly for protection.
No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented this behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017.
