The wife of a merchant and shipowner by the name of Allan Gilmour, she died in childbirth in 1849, aged just 33, leaving behind a newborn and their three older siblings, the children so skillfully sculpted by Mossman for her memorial.

A beautiful and poignant sculpture on one side of the base of an otherwise plain obelisk in the Necropolis in Glasgow. The only words on this memorial are 'Beloved Mother', and the name G. Mossman, one of the city's finest sculptors. Some determined digging by the historian Diane Burns, means we can now put a name to this particular mother: Agnes Strang.

The inscription reads:

"The Merchants House of Glasgow created ... May 1837 an opening ... the road by St Anne [?] Street into their property. In leau of the road in front of this wall which they have right to open and use at pleasure. The width of the road at Forefield Street is twelve feet two inches and at this wall seventeen feet. James Martin D. Of G."

It's thought to be a relic of a legal dispute with Hugh Tennant, the owner of the neighbouring Wellpark Brewery, who objected to burials taking place in close proximity to the water supply he used for his beer-making activities.

At first glance, this inscribed stone in the southern wall of the Necropolis in central Glasgow seems like just another grave marker, but when you examine it more closely, you see it's something quite different.

It's the last of what were once three similar stones installed by James Martin, Dean of Guild, when the cemetery was being created in the 1830s by the Merchants House of Glasgow.

I was at a #Necropolis event last weekend. We've crafted display boxes in the morning, before an afternoon of games. It was really great. Necropolis is a real gem, not too complex, but allowing to have great games with tactical depth. The people I have met there were very friendly, and I hope we meet again someday.

28. Mausoleum

🧠The family who built this must be very rich for it to be so big and high up!

⭐I like the colour of the stone and the different textures on the structure.

➡️ It's probably looking a bit too similar to my other Necropolis pictures!
