'While all the artists have learning disabilities, they talk about themselves as artists, not learning-disabled artists..The art is only outsider art if those who produce it are seen as outsiders.'

This is an old piece by Simon Jarrett from the arts pages of Community Living, the magazine about inclusion - I'm editing the next issue but wanted to share this vibrant image of 'floating dancers' (love the title) by Nancy Clayton.

Nothing better than a Christmas Day post-walk paw on foot situ with plenty of blankets.

Today has been a crazy day, so as I wind down, I just want to say a huge congratulation to Scotland again on passing the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, hopefully the rest of the UK will catch up soon.

Hi all! Over the winter break, I'm running a reading group on Simone de Beauvoir's Ethics of Ambiguity, one of the key texts of existentialist philosophy. The group is open to all and no prior training/detailed knowledge is necessary! The second session is Friday, 23 December, 1-2PM BST. We'll be reading the crucial second chapter, Personal Freedom and Others. Details, link to online version of the text, and how to join here: 👇 https://janabacevic.net/2022/11/27/ethics-of-ambiguity-reading-group/

Day 20 #CQCAdvent

Staff worked in very close partnership with parents and carers to take positive risks which resulted in children and young people trying new activities, acquiring new skills and growing in confidence.

One young person with additional learning needs and physical disabilities was able to increase their use of indoor play equipment and had gone on to use further play activities

Virtual Presence: Loneliness, technology and the production of human (dis)connectedness

In this Research Topic, we explore the intersection of loneliness, technology, and human (dis)connectedness by examining the tools through which loneliness is addressed and ‘solved’. Even prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, loneliness had emerged as a significant challenge to health and wellbeing in contemporary society, prompting technologists and industry designers to produce ‘loneliness technologies’ – such as video chat solutions, social robots, smart speakers, and social media platforms – in attempts to tackle the problem. These technologies all aim to foster a sense of social connectedness, by producing a form of virtual presence. Simultaneously, however, these technologies are also cast in the role as causes of loneliness and disconnectedness – because they afford only secondary or ‘artificial’ togetherness and thus suppress ‘real’ togetherness. To capitalize on these tensions, this Research Topic contends that loneliness technologies can serve as a lens for understanding the complicated relationships between loneliness, technology, and human (dis)connectedness. The Research Topic of Virtual Presence brings together novel empirical and theoretical work on loneliness technologies to consider the complicated relationships between loneliness, technology, and human (dis)connectedness. Against the background of different welfare systems and institutions all concerned with the health implications of loneliness, we will examine loneliness technologies in development and use a...

About a week away from winter #solstice and we’ve entered the season of the #analemma:
Around about now the Northern hemisphere, evenings are starting to get lighter again!
Sadly the mornings keep getting darker until almost new year…. Still, the evenings are no longer drawing in! Celebrate and be merry!
Go on then, Sid in the snow. [Few seconds of black, scruffy dog rolling in snow.]
