Lauren WeinsteinI used to hang around the Bell Labs Murray Hill 1127 lab -- where UNIX originated -- sometimes when I was in the area. A fond memory is sitting at a terminal in there (probably a Blit) working on a program back on my L.A. system over the Net. I ran into a complicated C declaration issue. Sitting a few feet away at the next terminal was Dennis Ritchie (dmr) -- a wonderful guy. Well hell, since he created C, who better to ask about this. So I did, and he instantly offered me an elegant solution I would never have thought of. Years later, it occurred to me that this was the closest I'd ever be to getting advice directly from a god.

But if you want to try, bailing it out before the lesson is learned is the worst way to go about it.
Too bad Fred Trump didn't understand this when he bailed out his son's casino.

Today in Labor History March 16, 1995: Mississippi finally ratified the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, banning chattel slavery, 130 years after it was officially ratified by the U.S. in 1865. However, Mississippi never formally notified the U.S. archivist of its belated decision. In other words, the 1995 ratification was unofficial and did not legally count. It would not be until February 7, 2013, 148 years later, that it would make its ratification of the amendment legal.
