I love the 1984 version of Dune but their characters were so over the top! Look at this guy. An orange, necrotic, decaying pedophile billionaire ruler who starts wars in a desert on his own personal whims, all to control an important limited resource that's necessary for commerce and transportation. Talk about unrealistic.

Adversarial umbrella design “exploits deficiencies in camera-based, autonomous target-tracking technology.” Umbrella also useful if it rains.

I just proofread the American Astronomical Society response to SpaceX's response to AAS's petition to deny on SpaceX's million sat filing. It's a great document, but the fact that we need to say any of this (and spend volunteer time fighting SpaceX's highly paid lawyers) is completely infuriating.

I need to go outside now, really tough that I'm in a city and don't have a hay field available for easy rage-screaming.

I used to hang around the Bell Labs Murray Hill 1127 lab -- where UNIX originated -- sometimes when I was in the area. A fond memory is sitting at a terminal in there (probably a Blit) working on a program back on my L.A. system over the Net. I ran into a complicated C declaration issue. Sitting a few feet away at the next terminal was Dennis Ritchie (dmr) -- a wonderful guy. Well hell, since he created C, who better to ask about this. So I did, and he instantly offered me an elegant solution I would never have thought of. Years later, it occurred to me that this was the closest I'd ever be to getting advice directly from a god.

The inkless device works a bit like a printing press.

Wise decision.

The saying is that you can't fix stupid.

But if you want to try, bailing it out before the lesson is learned is the worst way to go about it.

Too bad Fred Trump didn't understand this when he bailed out his son's casino.
